Gian had just received confirmation of the partnership with Vanguard Technologies.
With a new branch opening in Northridge, Nathan was stationed there, which meant Gian would naturally need to communicate with him more often.
Nathan was in the hospital due to illness. Otherwise, he would have attended tonight’s charity gala as well.
Gian was confiding in Danielle.
“This news came out of nowhere. What’s your take on it? Nathan’s return was awfully sudden, too.”
Danielle tightened her grip on her glass.
“I’ll get to the bottom of it.”
Something didn’t sit right with her.
Nathan’s return was abrupt.
Alexander’s attitude had become strange.
All these things left Danielle deeply unsettled.
“Work-wise, just follow protocol and things will run smoothly,” Gian said, glancing at Danielle. “But Nathan isn’t Alexander. Who knows what kind of catches are hidden in this partnership?”
Danielle’s brow furrowed.
Alexander cared deeply about the Davidson family, and about Jake’s reputation.
But Nathan?
Linda’s words echoed in her mind.
Bianca had never treated Nathan well.
She’d sent him overseas, and Jake had agreed to it.
With that kind of background, Nathan should resent the Davidson family—and Alexander most of all.
That meant he probably didn’t care about Jake’s reputation at all.
His return was like a time bomb planted under the Davidson family.
No wonder Alexander handed over the Davidson Group so easily.
And Nathan refused to take it.
Not because, as he claimed, the Davidson family was a burden no one wanted to touch.
But because once he accepted, he’d become one with the Davidson family.
If he took over, he’d only be stepping into Alexander’s cage—another bird trapped in a gilded prison, just like Jake.
And what Alexander really wanted, perhaps, was freedom.
Danielle took a deep breath and set down her glass. “Gian, we need to keep a close eye on anything involving Nathan.”
“I trust him, but it’s been a long time since we last saw each other.”
People change; you can never be too careful.

At intermission, Danielle slipped out to the hallway for some air.
The party inside was a blur of drinks and noisy conversation, and she felt a headache coming on.
She wandered into the back garden, where the lights were dim and the area nearly deserted.
Danielle inhaled deeply, savoring the cool, fresh night.
