Madeline sucked in a couple of sharp breaths, but it was like the air just wouldn’t reach her lungs. She doubled over, clutching the front of her shirt tight against her chest, the pain in her heart tearing her apart. It hurt so much, it felt as if something inside her was being ripped to shreds, like a thousand knives stabbing at once. She bit down hard, sobbing, but not a sound came out.
Julian’s eyes widened as he rushed forward and wrapped his arms around her shaking body. He held her tight, almost crushing, desperate to keep her together even as he felt her trembling through both their clothes. His arms closed around her even more, almost without thinking, as if he could hold her pain away.
It was only autumn, but the world around them felt as cold as the dead of winter.
Madeline shivered and tried to push him off, her voice cracking. “Let… let me go. Please, let me go. I need to see Noah. Noah… let me go…” The tears spilled out, big and heavy, impossible to stop. Noah. Her little boy. Her baby. Nothing could happen to him!
Julian just kept holding her as she struggled, his jaw clenched tight, his own heart aching like something had been ripped out of him. “Madeline, calm down. We’ll figure this out. There’s got to be a way. He’ll be okay. He’ll be okay.” He kept repeating it, over and over, hoping it would be true.
However, none of it could reach her. Madeline heard his words, but she just felt emptier, more alone. She tried to shove him away, and he only held her tighter.
The pain was real. It was unbearable.
Julian didn’t even understand why it hurt so much. It wasn’t his child lying in that hospital bed, and yet he wished it was him shouldering the pain instead. He was supposed to hate Madeline, but hearing her cry like that made it hard to breathe.
In his arms, Madeline went stiff, her lips trembling. “Julian.” She closed her eyes. “Do you see it now? Everything I warned you about… it’s all happening.”
A deep exhaustion washed over her, dragging her down. She’d told him before—so long as she was tied to Julian, she’d never be free from all the schemes and danger swirling around her.
