“What are you wishing for?” Lucy asked out of nowhere, her eyes still closed.
Helene’s hands, pressed together in prayer, trembled just a bit. She hesitated, then answered softly, “That poor child… I was hoping God would help him get better soon.”
She thought Lucy would praise her for being compassionate. Instead, Lucy paused, then spoke in a steady voice. “If you don’t mean it, there’s no point. Go get some rest.”
Was she being asked to leave? Helene bit her lip, feeling exposed, as if Lucy could see straight through her. She didn’t argue ajd slipped away quietly.
Lucy shook her head. She knew exactly what was going on between Helene and Madeline. Honestly, she was surprised Helene wasn’t causing even more trouble for Madeline right now. Helene would never pray for her child’s recovery.
Lucy could put up with Helene’s little games sometimes, but when she laid it on too thick, Lucy lost all patience.
Stung by Lucy’s words, Helene felt annoyed. She didn’t linger. She gave a message to a servant for Lucy, then left. She couldn’t stand being here any longer. Anywhere Julian was sounded better.
Walking out of the Grayson estate, Helene called Julian. The phone rang for a while before he finally picked up, his voice low and a little rough. “What’s up?”
Just hearing him made Helene’s heart flutter. “Julian, are you at the office?”
“No.” Julian was sitting on a bench outside the ICU, looking tired and worn out.
Helene picked up on the fatigue in his voice. She asked gently, “Are you at the hospital? I could come by… I want to see Noah, too.”
Julian’s eyebrows drew together. He couldn’t stop thinking about how Helene might be involved in all this. His voice went cold. “Don’t come.”
“Why not? Julian, I— What’s going on?”
Suddenly, the driver slammed the brakes. The car jerked to a stop.
Helene wasn’t ready for it. Her head smacked against the seat in front, and her phone slipped from her hand.
