Julian stared at Helene, struggling to breathe as blood soaked through her clothes. His hands clenched tight, anger boiling up inside him until it threatened to explode.
Was Madeline completely out of her mind?
How could she do this? Did she realize what she had just started? Going after Helene was basically declaring war on the entire Fortner family. Did Madeline have any clue what she was about to face?
“Boss, Ms. Fortner is bleeding badly. It’s not looking good.”
Helene was barely hanging on, slumped in the chair and drifting in and out of consciousness. Julian squeezed his eyes shut, fighting to keep it together. Right now, only one thing mattered. Helene could not die.
He crossed the room in a few long strides, knelt beside her, and yanked the knife from her leg. The bodyguards had been too afraid to touch it, but Julian didn’t even hesitate. Helene’s body jerked from the pain, her eyes fluttering open. She saw Julian scooping her up, holding her close as he rushed toward the door.
Her lips were almost white, but her eyes were red and full of tears. They slid down her cheeks as she bit down hard, doing everything she could not to cry out. She looked heartbreakingly vulnerable.
“Julian… am I going to die? It hurts so much. I’m scared, Julian. I’m really scared…”
“You’re not going to die,” Julian said, his voice sharp as he carried her out. She couldn’t die. If she did, Madeline would pay with her life.
“I’m so cold. It hurts, Julian…”
“Stay with me. We’re almost at the hospital.”
Helene forced herself to look at him. Her whole body screamed in pain, but for the first time, her heart felt warm. Julian was worried about her. He really cared. She couldn’t die now. She had to live… she had to make Madeline pay.
Julian got her to the hospital faster than seemed possible. He didn’t leave her side until the doctors wheeled her into the emergency room. As the doors swung closed, his expression hardened.
“Boss.” Miles ran up, breathless. “The Fortners found out. They’re on their way here right now.”
