Julian pressed his lips together, saying nothing. The anger in his eyes was impossible to miss, swirling darker with every passing second. Miles, standing nearby, was so nervous he dropped his gaze and hunched his shoulders even more. He just couldn’t wrap his head around it. Back when Julian had been hospitalized after that car accident, Madeline had been by his side every day, taking care of him for two whole months. Mr. Grayson had seemed to like her a lot back then, even going public with the news that she’d be Julian’s wife and that the Grayson family would always support her.
Then, out of nowhere, everything changed. Mr. Grayson’s attitude did a complete flip. Madeline hadn’t done a thing, but suddenly he was cold to her, almost hostile. When Julian finally woke up after two months, his grandfather insisted he marry Madeline, but at the same time, he turned a blind eye to how harsh Julian was treating her. Mr. Grayson himself stopped pretending to be nice. It all felt like some twisted form of punishment, and nobody could figure out what the old man was really thinking.
Julian picked up his phone and walked over to the window. Outside, sunlight spilled over the city, but his eyes stayed cold, filled with a storm he kept hidden deep inside.
“What’s the meaning of this?” His voice was icy.
On the other end, his grandfather scoffed, his voice sharp and full of authority. “Is that any way to talk to your grandfather? Are you really wasting your time questioning me about some woman who doesn’t matter? Helene is your future wife. If she’s hurt, it’s an insult to you. Shouldn’t you do something about that?”
Julian let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Grandpa, you know better than I do who started it.”
Madeline was just standing up for her child. She hadn’t done anything wrong. If Julian had been the one to deal with it, Helene would be lucky to still be alive.
“I don’t care about the details,” Christian said. “All I know is she touched someone she shouldn’t have.”
“Someone she shouldn’t have? Grandpa, since when is Helene so important to you?” Julian’s tone dripped with sarcasm. Everyone knew the Grayson family was all his grandfather cared about. Since when did Helene matter so much?
“She’s not important. What matters is her future role as your wife. She can’t be seen as weak, and her reputation can’t be stained.”
“So, even though she started it, Madeline wasn’t allowed to defend herself? Helene does whatever she wants, and you’re willing to let Gabby take the fall for her?”
