Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 328

Madeline paused, letting the pieces fall into place in her mind. She had a good idea who was behind this. If her hunch was right, it might as well have been her own doing.

Julian looked away, his face unreadable. “I never said that.”

Madeline nodded, accepting it. “Still, I wouldn’t blame you for thinking it.”

Just then, a doctor stepped out of the ICU. Madeline stood up immediately. The doctor gave her a nod, letting her know she could go in to see her son. Without another glance at Julian, Madeline walked into the room.

Noah looked just as he had yesterday. He lay there with an oxygen mask covering his small, pale face. His eyes were shut tight, his little body so still he barely seemed alive. Seeing him like this drained every bit of strength from Madeline. She tried to breathe, taking long, shaky breaths, but the weight in her chest refused to lift.

Like always, Madeline sat beside him. She gently wrapped her hands around his and started telling him stories, her voice soft and careful, as if the words might break him. She didn’t know how long she sat there, speaking until her throat ached and she couldn’t hold back the tears. Eventually, she just bowed her head, her words caught in her chest.

Another day and night slipped by. The hours the doctor had given her were almost gone. Noah's condition hadn’t gotten worse, but there was no sign of improvement either. The doctor said he was suffering, only alive because the machines kept him breathing. If he didn’t wake up, even if his body kept going, he’d never come back to her. He’d just be there, trapped in a body that couldn't respond.

Madeline knew exactly what it meant. Still, as long as there was even the tiniest chance that Noah might come back to her, she just couldn’t let go.

Her lips shook as she whispered, “I’m sorry, Noah. I know I’m being selfish… but I can’t let you leave me. I just can’t.”

Night came and went. The doctor’s warning hadn’t come true, but neither had Madeline’s hope. Noah stayed lost in his deep sleep.

Julian had barely left her side these past two days. Now he stood outside the door, his face drawn and tired.
