Courtney stared hard at her, holding her gaze for a long time before her eyes turned sharp. “Helene, you need to calm down. No matter what happens, you can’t admit to anything. Not a single thing. We’ve already called Christian. He’s going to protect you, whatever it takes.”
“But it’s not the same, Mom. If Julian finds out the baby is his, how do I even begin to explain the pregnancy from years ago? The only reason Julian let me go back then was because he thought the baby was his. Now, if he finds out it wasn’t… I don’t even know what to do anymore…”
Helene’s thoughts were a tangled mess. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t think of a way out.
Courtney squeezed her hand tightly. “Just stick to the story. Say the baby was Julian’s. The child is already gone. There’s nothing left to check.”
“Do you really think that will work?” Helene’s grip on Courtney’s hand tightened, her knuckles turning white.
“It’s the only shot we have. Your baby was conceived that night. Madeline’s kid might not have been. If you keep saying Julian slept with you, he’ll feel guilty about it.”
Helene bit her lip, took a shaky breath, and nodded. Right now, this was all she could do.
…
Helene didn’t bother dressing up. She threw a thin jacket over her hospital gown, her long black hair hanging loose around her shoulders. Her face was pale and drawn, eyes rimmed red, lips almost colorless. She looked so fragile, it was hard not to feel sorry for her.
When she arrived at the Grayson house, she found Lucy sitting alone on the sofa. Julian wasn’t anywhere around. Helene walked over and spoke softly. “Mrs. Grayson.”
Lucy looked up and froze for a moment when she saw Helene’s tired face. “Why are you here all of a sudden?”
A maid helped Helene sit down next to Lucy. Helene pressed her lips together. “Julian sent someone to pick me up.”
“Did he say what for?”
