Helene squeezed her hands into tight fists at her sides. Everyone’s attention was on her now. Just a moment ago, people were still trying to talk her down, but after what Josh said, their looks had changed. Suspicion replaced concern in their eyes.

She felt trapped. If she jumped, it would be the end. If she didn’t, she’d make a fool of herself in front of everyone.

Josh finally looked away. “Brady, let’s go. No need to interrupt Ms. Fortner’s little show.”

Brady couldn’t hold back his laughter. He let out a sharp snort, then started laughing for real.

Helene bit down hard, her jaw tight with humiliation. She leaned back a little and glanced down. It’s eighteen floors. There was no way anyone would survive a fall from here.

A wave of fear hit her. The wind picked up, making her shiver. She grabbed the railing tighter, terrified she might actually fall.

She took a shaky breath. Everyone was watching. If she didn’t keep up the act, today would just turn into a joke everyone would remember.

Helene looked at Courtney, took another deep breath, and started to lean back slowly.

“Helene!” Courtney rushed over, panic in her voice.

The crowd around them jolted in surprise. Almost by instinct, a few people ran forward and grabbed Helene, pulling her away from the edge.

Hands scrambled for her, some accidentally hitting her injuries. Pain shot through her and sweat beaded on her forehead.
