“How long are you planning to give me the silent treatment?”
He grabbed Madeline’s wrist.
Madeline looked away. “It’s not the silent treatment. I just don’t have anything to say to you.”
She honestly had no idea what she could possibly say to him.
“Oh, nothing to say to me, but you’re all smiles and giggles with Casey, right? You can talk to him for hours, even hug him when you’re done. Is that it?” Julian’s voice was icy.
Julian couldn’t remember the last time he’d seen that easy, natural smile on Madeline’s face. Ever since she’d come back from abroad, she’d treated him with nothing but cold indifference.
Madeline turned to him, her expression stubborn. “Yeah, I like joking around with him. So what if I hug him? Why do you care? Even if I kissed him, it wouldn’t be any of your business.”
Her words were like tossing gasoline on a bonfire. Julian’s expression went even colder.
“Fine. Have it your way.”
He bent down and scooped her up before she could react.
The sudden lift made Madeline gasp, and she instinctively clung to his neck.
“Julian, what the hell are you doing? Are you out of your mind? Put me down!” Madeline pounded his shoulder, trying to break free.
Julian acted like he didn’t even hear her. He just held her tighter, her fists and curses bouncing off him. No matter how hard she struggled, she couldn’t budge him.
He carried her straight to the car, shoved her inside, and walked around to the driver’s side. Madeline saw her chance, threw open the door, and tried to escape.
Julian caught her right away, dragged her back in, got behind the wheel himself, and locked the doors with a sharp click.
Madeline jabbed at the unlock button, but nothing happened.
She gave up, turning away from him, arms crossed, eyes squeezed shut as she leaned back in the seat. She wasn’t going to say a single word to him.
Julian took off, driving way too fast. The road was wide and empty, and he pressed the gas like he wanted to break something. Madeline’s heart was pounding so hard, it felt like it might jump right out of her chest.
“Julian, are you insane?”
She felt like the car was about to take off. She held onto the seatbelt for dear life and glanced at him. “Julian!”
