Helene drew in a long breath. “Mom, tell them to come in and help with my makeup. Even if Julian bails on me at the last minute, I’m still going to look amazing out there. There’s no way I’m letting Madeline steal the spotlight.”
“That’s what I like to hear. My daughter was born to turn heads.” Courtney gave Helene’s shoulder an approving pat.
Helene’s smile softened as she gazed at her flawless reflection in the mirror. It didn’t matter how she managed to marry Julian. As long as she could call him hers, that was enough. She was convinced that, with time, feelings would grow. Julian would eventually see her true worth.
But Madeline… Just thinking of her made Helene’s eyes go cold. Shr had gotten away with too much for too long. Sooner or later, Helene would make sure she was out of the picture for good.
...
Upstairs, in a quiet side room overlooking the ballroom, Madeline and Casey leaned against the railing, watching as guests started to fill the space below. No one seemed to notice that the two of them were holding completely different invitations. It wasn’t a coincidence that the birthday and engagement party guests were all streaming into the same place. This was Helene’s doing, plain and simple.
Meanwhile, Julian was sitting in the conference room of his company’s branch office in A City. His phone, facedown on the table, buzzed suddenly. He glanced down, and his expression darkened immediately.
The department head sitting nearby was in the middle of a report when Julian picked up his phone. The sharp sound of his chair scraping back made everyone freeze. The director stopped talking mid-sentence, and the rest of the team exchanged nervous glances. The tension in the room was thick enough to choke on. Their boss was in a bad mood, and no one wanted to be the one who set him off.
Julian stood up and walked to the window, phone in hand. He dialed a number. The call connected almost instantly.
“Is today her birthday?” His voice was so cold it sent a chill right through Miles, who was all the way back in the Capital.
Miles answered quickly, “Yes, boss. Today’s Ms. Monroe’s birthday. She’s throwing a party, too.”
Julian’s grip tightened around his phone. His eyes lost their usual sharpness and turned heavy. He couldn’t believe he was such a lousy husband. Madeline had been his wife for three years, and he hadn’t even known her birthday. She never told him, and neither did the twins. Clearly, none of them wanted him there.
