“What kind of document is that?”
Miles hesitated for a second, sounding nervous. “It looks like… it might be a paternity test report.”
Julian’s hand stopped in midair, his fingers tightening around the envelope. For a split second, it felt like something punched the air right out of his chest.
He stared at Madeline. She stood there, so still, her expression calm and almost cold. Even when she heard the words “paternity test,” she didn’t so much as blink. She already knew.
Julian’s eyebrows drew together, tense.
Madeline was completely unfazed, but the rest of the room was the exact opposite.
Helene’s face twisted with panic, like she’d just seen a ghost.
A paternity test?
Who got a paternity test done?
Who sent this?
Both Helene and Courtney stared, eyes wide with shock.
Helene snapped her head toward Madeline.
Madeline just raised an eyebrow, a barely-there smile on her lips, like she was in on a secret.
Madeline.
Of course it was Madeline!
She must have done the paternity test behind everyone’s back, and now she wanted Julian to find out about the kid at the worst possible moment.
Helene’s lips trembled. She watched Julian about to open the envelope, her mind racing with every possible disaster. In the end, only one thought stuck. He can’t see it.
Without thinking, Helene rushed forward, snatched the envelope from Julian’s hand, and tore it apart. She looked half-crazed, desperate.
