Julian sat in his study, the air around him sharp with cold anger. Nothing unusual had happened with Casey. Madeline hadn’t shown up, not even once. She was still missing, like she’d vanished into thin air.

The thugs hadn’t changed their story, no matter how hard anyone pressed them. They insisted Madeline was the one who hired them. Even when Julian brought in their families and made threats he didn’t want to make, they didn’t budge. There was no way they’d risk their families for anyone else. Julian checked everything. No one had dirt on them. They hadn’t taken any money from someone else. No one had threatened them. What they said was the truth. He’d hit a dead end.

That made Julian think of the video Helene had talked about before. He looked up. “Miles, bring Helene here.”

“Right away.”

It took less than ten minutes. Helene came in on a stretcher, almost completely wrapped in bandages. Two men carried her in. Her eyes were wide with fear. When she saw him, she shrank back, heart in her throat.

Julian sat on the sofa, his dark eyes fixed on Helene. He didn’t say a word. The silence felt heavy, like something bad was about to happen. Helene was nothing like she used to be. Now, she was so scared she couldn’t even lift her head.

“Give me the video.”

“The video?” Her voice was rough. She looked up, panicked. “Which… video are you talking about…”

“The one on your phone. From that day.”
