“Julian, where are you off to now?” Lucy called out, her voice laced with worry.
“Picking up the kids,” Julian replied without even glancing back. He was already striding out the door.
Lucy watched him rush away and couldn’t help but shake her head. There was no way he was just going to get the kids. Something was up.
Christian appeared at the top of the stairs, moving slowly as he came down. He caught sight of Julian leaving—again. With a quiet scoff, he muttered, “No sense of manners. Where is he running off to now?”
Lucy just brushed it off. “He’s picking up the kids. Let’s start dinner first.”
Christian didn’t argue, settling into his seat.
Meanwhile, Julian told the driver to get to the restaurant as fast as possible. He held his phone tightly, a weird sense of anticipation growing in his chest.
Could it be…her? Was she back?
That thought took over his mind. The more he tried to ignore it, the stronger it got. His heartbeat sped up. He needed to know. He needed to see for himself.
Over in a private room at the restaurant, the group had just finished ordering their food. Madeline poured juice for the two kids and listened while Brenda filled her in on everything that had happened over the past couple of months.
“Helene’s been missing for two months now,” Brenda said, shaking her head.
Madeline blinked in surprise. “Missing?”
“Yeah. No one’s seen her since that night. She didn't even show up at her family’s perfume launch last month. Everyone thinks she’s hiding out, embarrassed because of what happened at the engagement party.”
Madeline shook her head. “That doesn’t sound like Helene. She’s never been the type to hide after something goes wrong. If anything, she fights harder.”
