Julian rubbed his temples and walked over to the bed. Two little lumps wiggled under the blanket, moving around like a pair of restless bugs. He pulled back the covers and there they were, his two boys lying on his bed with wide, hopeful grins.
“Daddy, you’re here,” Oliver beamed. “We’ll sleep with you tonight. Come on, get in.”
Oliver patted the spot next to him. Noah scooted over, making plenty of room.
Julian’s eyebrow twitched. “What are you two doing?”
“Daddy, you always say you can’t sleep at night, right? Here.” Noah shoved a textbook into his hand.
Julian stared at it, rubbing his brow. “And what’s this for?”
“To read,” Noah said, matter-of-fact. “Whenever I read, I get sleepy. It works for me. You should try it.”
Julian just stared at them, lost for words.
Oliver wriggled into the blankets and looked up at him. “Come on, Daddy, start reading.”
Julian sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “If you’ve got something to say, just say it.”
“Really? We can just say it?” Oliver’s eyes sparkled.
“Yes.”
“Then lie down, Daddy.”
The boys each grabbed a hand and tugged until Julian gave in and leaned back on the bed. Oliver giggled. “Daddy…”
He paused, then reached out and started massaging Julian’s shoulders. “Daddy, we want to talk to you about something.”
Noah piped up, “We want to live with Mommy.”
Julian had seen this coming. He stayed quiet, waiting.
The boys got nervous and rushed to explain, “Don’t worry, Daddy, we won’t leave you all alone. If we have to, we’ll come back once a week. We can give you one whole day. How about that?”
Julian almost cried. One day out of seven, and they made it sound generous.
Noah looked up at him. “Can we?”
“No,” Julian said flatly.
“Why not?” Both boys got anxious. They liked Daddy well enough, but Mommy was still their favorite.
“It’ll just make things complicated,” Julian said, his voice serious. “You want Great Grandpa keeping his eyes on her all the time?”
Both boys shook their heads instantly. Great Grandpa was nice to them, but when it came to Mommy, he was the villain.
“So you stay here,” Julian said. “That’s the only way your mom can have some peace. Or…” He raised an eyebrow. “Why not just ask her to move in here?”
Noah and Oliver’s eyes lit up. “Can she?”
