Madeline paused for a second. Was she really hesitating to sit on her own sofa? She walked over and took a seat, leaving enough space between them for one more person.
Neither of them said a word. It looked like they were just two people who couldn’t sleep, sitting there watching a movie together. But neither of them was really paying attention to the screen. Halfway through, Julian suddenly felt something rest against his shoulder.
His heart skipped a beat.
He turned and his chin brushed against her forehead. She was already fast asleep. He reached out, gently wrapping an arm around her, and a small smile tugged at his lips.
He picked her up and carried her to the kids’ room, moving as carefully as if she were made of glass. He lay down beside her, still gentle, as if she was the most precious thing in the world.
She had this faint, cool scent that somehow calmed the restless thoughts swirling in Julian’s head. He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her smooth forehead, then closed his eyes and held her close, finally relaxing.
Madeline had no idea when she’d fallen asleep. All she knew was when she woke up, she was in Noah and Oliver’s room. She rubbed her forehead, trying to remember what happened, her thoughts slowly falling back into place.
Sunlight poured in through the window. She sat up fast and hurried out into the living room.
Julian was gone, and so were the kids. When she glanced at the clock, she realized it was already eight.
Julian must have taken them to school.
Madeline was about to head to the bathroom when she noticed a few sleek, insulated containers on the dining table. She walked over and opened them, finding a warm breakfast waiting for her.
There was a small note next to them. It just said, Remember to have breakfast.
Nothing else.
The handwriting was definitely Julian’s.
Madeline’s eyelashes trembled. She put the note aside, went to freshen up, ate her breakfast, and then headed out.
She had just reached the garage when a sharp, angry voice rang out behind her. “You little bitch, so you’re not dead after all!”
Madeline turned and saw Courtney charging at her out of nowhere.
