Christian thought it over and stayed quiet.
Noah and Oliver heard Madeline was here and raced down the stairs. “Mommy, did you come to see us?” Both boys were so happy, faces lighting up in a way Christian had never seen before. No matter how much he spoiled his great-grandsons, they had never smiled at him like that.
Madeline lowered her head and gently ruffled their hair. “Of course. I came to see my two little babies.”
“Why don’t you all head upstairs for a bit? I’ll call you when dinner’s ready,” Lucy chimed in.
Lucy just wanted to get Madeline away from Christian. She could already feel the tension, worried Christian would make things awkward for Madeline.
“Now you’re on her side too?” He saw right through Lucy’s plan.
He knew exactly what Lucy was thinking. Ever since she found out the boys were Julian’s children, she’d been hoping Madeline and Julian could work things out.
“Dad, I just worry about the kids. I worry about Julian too,” Lucy said quietly. “You saw what he was like when Madeline was gone these past two months. I want them to be a real family, to give the boys a happy home. It’s not like Madeline ever did anything truly wrong. We only hated her because we thought she was having another man’s babies, and we blamed her for Helene’s miscarriage. But now we know the truth. Those boys are Julian’s, and Madeline never hurt Helene’s baby.”
Lucy had gone over it again and again in her mind. Madeline had no reason to hurt Helene’s child. There had to be something else behind it all.
She thought back to how they’d treated Madeline over the years, even after she gave the Graysons two children. The guilt stung more than she wanted to admit.
Christian slammed his teacup down on the table. The sound echoed through the room, heavy and sharp.
