“A girl’s got to learn to protect herself, right?”
Claire nodded. “So, what’s your plan? You send that video out and think you’ll just walk away? Now that I know you have it, there’s zero chance I’ll let you go. If I go down, you’re coming with me.”
Madeline shrugged. “Works for me. You kill me, the video goes out. We both lose—or maybe I win. When I’m gone, my name’s cleared. At least people will know the truth.”
“And you?” Madeline leaned back, her eyes never leaving Claire. “You’ll be hated, disgraced. Julian won’t let you off. The Ballard family won’t, either. Oh, and I’ve got a few friends who know how to hold a grudge. You could run to the ends of the earth. They’d still find you. So really, who’s got it worse?”
Madeline dragged over a chair and sat down, perfectly calm. She looked completely unfazed by the situation.
Watching her, Claire’s confidence started to crack.
Madeline talked like she was ready to die. Claire wasn’t. If that video spread, she might never get the chance. They’d tear her apart before she could even think about escape.
She’d spent years clawing her way to this point. She hadn’t even tasted a real victory yet. There was no way she’d let herself get trapped now.
Claire clenched her jaw. “What do you want?”
Madeline shot her a sideways look. “First, give him the antidote.”
“And then what? You hand over the antidote and think you two will make it out? Get real. I spent ages finding this place. Nobody’s coming for you. Not Julian, not anyone. You’re not getting out.”
“Give him the antidote.” Madeline’s tone was like ice, cutting through all of Claire’s excuses.
Claire darted a look at Madeline, then at Luke, who was swaying on his feet. “Fine. But he’s dangerous. I’m tying his hands before I give it to him.”
Luke could barely stand, poisoned and weak, but Claire wasn’t taking any chances.
Madeline barely blinked. “Then we all die. Your call.”
