Carter kept his head down and didn’t dare protest. “You’re right, Miss. I screwed up. I deserve whatever punishment you give me.”
Claire reached out and grabbed his collar, hauling him in close. “Deserve it? You could die ten times and it still wouldn’t cover this mess.”
Carter just stared at the floor, the shame heavy in his voice. He’d been sure that seizing the recorder meant everything was under control. He never thought Madeline would have another camera hidden inside her necklace.
“Miss, that woman is just too sneaky,” he muttered.
Claire’s jaw clenched, her anger simmering.
“So, what now?” Carter tried to keep his voice steady.
“What now?” Claire slammed her foot into his shin. “Stop asking me. If I knew the answer, would I be standing here yelling at you?”
The video was in Madeline’s hands. Killing her wasn’t an option—and letting her go was even worse.
Claire gnawed on her lip, fuming as she tried to think.
“Miss, maybe you could give her the same poison you gave Luke,” Carter offered. “If she’s hooked on your antidote, she’ll never breathe a word about the video.”
Claire squinted at him. “You think I haven’t considered that? Madeline’s not an idiot. There’s probably some genius around her who can cure any poison. Otherwise, how’d she survive last time?”
“That was stupid of me. I’m sorry.” Carter sounded even smaller.
Before Claire could snap back, gunshots rang out from the next room.
She stiffened. “Damn it.”
She rushed for the door, but before she could get there, it burst open with a kick that nearly knocked her off her feet.
“We have to go!” Luke’s voice was urgent as he snatched up a gun and fired several shots behind him.
Madeline wasted zero time. She took someone down with a blow, then raced to the entrance—only to come face to face with Claire.
Claire’s eyes turned cold. She yanked a vial from her pocket, popped the lid, and hurled its contents at Madeline. A thick cloud of powder exploded in the air. There was no way to dodge it.
“Aah!” Madeline cried out as her eyes burned with pain so sharp it knocked the breath out of her.
“Madeline!” Luke shouted. He aimed his gun at Claire and squeezed the trigger.
Claire yanked a guard into her path and ducked behind him.
Nothing happened. The gun was empty.
Without even thinking, Luke tossed the gun aside and launched a solid kick, sending both Claire and her backup flying into the wall.
Claire slammed into the plaster so hard she couldn’t catch her breath.
