Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 630

Julian narrowed his eyes. "And how exactly do you know that?"

Casey just arched an eyebrow, but it was Cody who answered for him. "Our boss had a team watching Madeline from the shadows. We saw she had a plan this time, so nobody stepped in. We followed the car that took her, but then she was moved onto a helicopter. We didn’t have one ready, so we lost track."

Casey’s gaze sharpened, and his tone was cold. "I figured if she was bold enough to meet Claire alone, she would've run it by you first. But by the looks of it, you didn’t even know her plan. She’s out there giving herself the courage to pull it off, and you’re... well, just useless."

Oliver had already called him for help, so he’d seen the video too.

He’d thought Julian could keep her safe. Turns out, Madeline had to protect herself in the end, all with a single video.

Julian’s face only grew darker.

Maybe he shouldn’t have tried to hold her back. Once she made up her mind, nobody could stop her.

Casey was right. Madeline went in with her own plan. The determination—it all came from her.

"I’m not in the mood for your little jabs right now."

"Then get to the Ballard house," Casey said, his eyes almost smirking. "If you want to find her, you’ll need to catch Claire first."

...

The sky was getting lighter by the minute. Madeline hadn’t moved all night. Luke, looking tense and careful, reached out to check if she was still breathing.

A wave of relief washed over him. She was alive.

After a little while, Madeline slowly opened her eyes. It was all still black—no light, no shapes, nothing.

Disappointment hit her hard, her lashes lowering.

"You're awake."

"Yeah." Her voice was soft.

Madeline tried to sit up, feeling around for the ground. Instead of damp, soft dirt, she touched something dry. "Where are we?"

He didn’t push for more, just went about his own business.

Madeline turned toward Luke. "Did you get your wound treated?"

"Don’t worry about me," Luke said quickly. "He put some herbs on it. The bullet barely skimmed me. I’m pretty sturdy—this is nothing. But you need to rest. He said your body’s weak, and you’ve got a serious fever. You should really take it easy."

Madeline pressed her lips together, worry flickering in her chest. Claire’s men were still hunting them. They couldn’t just stay put.

"We need to figure out how to get back."

The old man walked in, arms full of freshly gathered herbs, and scoffed. "You can forget about going anywhere for now. After a storm like that, the ground’s all soft. Even someone healthy wouldn’t try heading down the mountain today, let alone you two. One’s sick and blind, the other’s wounded. If you want to stay alive, don’t do anything stupid. You should be grateful you’re still breathing."

His words weren’t kind, but he wasn’t wrong either.

Madeline took a breath. "Sir, if we wanted to get down the mountain, how long would it take?"

"Four, maybe five hours on foot. Still, I have no idea how you kids ended up out here. Looks like you’re running for your lives."
