Shelly smiled, genuinely relieved. It looked like things were going well between them now.
“Come on, let’s go.” The guests at the party were growing restless. Shelly needed to head back.
Meanwhile, Claire fit in perfectly with the lively crowd. She moved through the sea of guests like she’d been doing this her whole life.
She had, really. Growing up in the wealthy Freeman family, then marrying into the Grayson family, she was used to this scene. These events didn’t rattle her in the slightest; she handled herself with an easy confidence.
“Ms. Ballard is getting more beautiful every day.”
“I know, she just has that aura. People like her are really in a league of their own.”
Everyone understood now—there was no longer any doubt about the Ballard family’s heiress. The woman before them had been chosen. Naturally, people were eager to ingratiate themselves.
“I always said, that whole thing before was just a mess. You’re the only Ms. Ballard. No one could ever replace you.”
“That’s right. Honestly, we always felt you were the real one, no matter what gossip was going around.”
“Exactly. Where did that imposter even go? She wouldn’t have the nerve to show up tonight, would she?”
“If she did, she’d only be embarrassing herself.”
Claire stood among the glamorous women, soaking up their flattery. Inside, she was smirking, but on the outside she wore a gentle, grateful smile.
“Thank you all for your support. That whole ordeal was really hard on me. I’m just grateful that the imposter didn’t pull it off.”
Her words just fanned the flames, and the group became even more animated.
“An imposter will always be just that. She could never take your place. It’s a shame you, as the real heiress, had to go through all that.”
“Ms. Ballard, what happened to her anyway? Don’t be soft on someone who tried to wreck your life. She needs to face the consequences.”
“Yeah, take her to court. People like that deserve to be locked up.”
Claire gave a tired sigh and shook her head. “Let’s just put it behind us. I’d rather be the bigger person. As long as she doesn’t try anything else, I won’t make trouble for her.”
“You’re just too good, Ms. Ballard.”
“Seriously. Anyone else would have taken her down, but you’re so compassionate.”
