Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 656

Madeline couldn’t help but wonder if this kind of twisted way of thinking could be passed down in families.

Drew acted like this. So did Raine. Now Claire was proving she was cut from the same cloth.

With a cold, almost pitying smile, Madeline shook her head. “I told you before. No matter how hard you try, a lie is still a lie. What isn’t yours just isn’t yours, no matter how much you want it.”

Down below, the guests finally put all the pieces together. Whispers started buzzing around the room.

“So Mrs. Grayson was right all along. This woman—it’s Claire, the adopted daughter. She went under the knife just to pretend she belonged here.”

“We really fell for it. How did we not notice? She even went online bragging, acting like she was actually Ms. Ballard… Does pretending to be someone else make you bolder, or just heartless?”

“This is seriously messed up. Who would go to such lengths? What kind of person does this?”

“The Ballard family must’ve been cursed to wind up with someone like her stalking them.”

Claire pulled herself up from the floor, her hair a mess and her eyes burning with resentment. She glared at the crowd, her anger aimed at every single person.

“None of you understand anything. Do you know why I did all this? Because that woman—she killed my adoptive father, Brian! At first, I wanted revenge. That’s why I made myself look like her daughter, so I could get close, get into the Ballard family, and pay her back. Tell me, what did I do wrong? And you, Julian!”

Eyes red and wild, Claire turned her fury on Julian, who stood stone-faced next to Madeline. She jabbed a finger toward Shelly.

“She’s the one who killed your father.”

She swung her finger to Madeline.

“And she’s the daughter of his killer. Tell me, how can you still stand with her? How can you take their side against me? We’re supposed to be family. You should be helping me. Everything I did, I did for Dad.”

Her voice cracked with a helpless kind of grief, the pain of someone who truly believed she’d been betrayed by her own flesh and blood.

Then Shelly spoke, cutting through the silence. “So Claire, you’re saying everything you did was to avenge Brian?”

Claire’s eyes snapped to Shelly, overflowing with bitterness. “Yes. You have no idea.”

“Are you really the one to say that? You were in that car too, remember? You know better than anyone what happened to him.”

Shelly couldn’t avoid the truth. She’d been the one to call Brian that night. She was the reason he changed his plans, the reason he took that route to the airport, the reason he ended up in that car crash.

This was on her. Every bit of it. If only she hadn’t called him, none of it would have happened.

She owed the Grayson family. She owed Brian more than she could ever repay.

Later, she’d had people investigate every detail about the accident. They even got their hands on dashcam footage from another car driving the same stretch of road. In that footage, Brian should have survived…
