Julian let out a dry, crooked smile. “Yeah. At the moment, I’m flat broke.”
Madeline shook her head, sighing loud enough to make a point, and gave Julian’s shoulder a gentle smack. “Don’t worry. I’m not exactly known for my kindness. If you get on my bad side, you’ll be out on the street in no time. And remember, this estate is in my name now. So, come on, Julian… start calling me ‘the Boss’ and maybe I’ll let you stay.”
Julian’s eyes flickered. He watched her playing around, then his lips curved just a little. “Boss.”
Madeline grinned, looking pleased. “See? That wasn’t so hard. You look so pitiful, I guess I have no choice but to let you come home with me.”
Julian’s smile grew. “I have something I need to take care of. You should go home first.”
“What is it?”
“It’s important.”
Madeline could tell she wasn’t getting more out of him, so she didn’t push. “Alright, but come back soon.”
“I will.” Julian walked her to the car himself and turned to Josh. “Can you make sure she gets home?”
“No problem. Are you sure you’re alright though?” Josh asked, eyeing Julian’s face with concern.
“I’m fine.” Julian didn’t say anything else. He slipped into another car and drove off.
Madeline listened to the engine fading into the distance, her mind spinning with questions.
As soon as Josh got behind the wheel, she leaned forward. “Josh, follow him.”
“Follow him?” Josh glanced at her. He hesitated, then started the car and merged into traffic, trailing Julian at a safe distance.
About half an hour later, the car finally stopped. Madeline turned to look out the window. “Josh, where are we?”
“We’re at the hospital,” Josh replied, pushing down the window a little. “Do you think Julian’s sick? Maybe he’s trying to keep you from worrying.”
“Maybe.” Her voice was soft.
“Want to go inside and check?”
Madeline fell quiet, studying her hands for a moment. “No, it’s fine.”
She already had her suspicions.
