“Madeline, are you done in there?”
“Madeline, did you get the results?”
Brenda pressed her ear closer to the door, anxiety bubbling up when she didn’t hear anything from inside.
Then came the soft click of the door. Madeline stepped out, and Brenda’s heart paused mid-beat. “Well? What happened?”
Madeline didn’t answer. Instead, she just threw her arms around Brenda in a sudden hug.
“Wait, are you actually pregnant?” Brenda’s eyes went wide at Madeline’s smile. Wow, Julian doesn’t play around, does he? One shot, one kill—or what?
Madeline shook her head and laughed, a weight dropping from her shoulders. “No, I’m not. I’m not pregnant... Thank goodness.”
Brenda blinked. “You’re happy you’re not pregnant?” The surprise was clear on her face.
Madeline nodded. “Honestly, yeah. I got hurt recently and had to use some meds. If I’d actually been pregnant, it would’ve been risky for the baby... and if I couldn’t keep the baby, that would’ve been even worse. Besides, look at me. I can barely look after myself right now, never mind a kid.”
Brenda pulled her into another hug, squeezing her tight. “You’ve been through so much, Madeline. I’m just glad things are finally calming down. You found your mom again, you and Mr. Grayson are back on track, and once your eyes heal, life’s going to get so much better. Trust me.”
Madeline managed a small smile. “You’re right. It has to get better from here. How’s everything at the company? I’m thinking about stopping by the R&D department tomorrow. My eyes might be useless right now, but my sense of smell is as sharp as ever.”
Brenda rolled her eyes affectionately. “Seriously? Just focus on healing for now. The formulas you left before you took the kids abroad are still good. I’m handling everything else, and Mr. Grayson has people here to help too, you know. Let yourself recover. By the way, where’s Shelly? Didn’t she come back with you?”
“She’s busy dealing with some family stuff with the Ballards. She should be here in a couple days.”
“Oh, when she shows up, I’m taking her out for a big dinner. Don’t even try to stop me.”
Madeline laughed lightly. “No one’s going to stop you.”
Just then, Madeline’s phone buzzed. She handed it to Brenda. “Can you check who’s calling?”
