They both knew exactly what was going on, and there was no point pretending otherwise.
Madeline’s fingers tightened, her voice suddenly turning cold. “It was you... You’re the one who stole Noah from me, aren’t you?”
Andrew nodded. “Helene lost her baby. At the time, I honestly thought you were responsible. I had people watching you, planning on getting back at you, eye for an eye.”
“Eye for an eye? So you were going to have someone run me over, kill my baby too?”
“Yes.” He met her question head on. That had been his plan, even though Julian ended up moving faster.
Madeline let out a cold, bitter laugh. “So if Julian hadn’t kicked me out and triggered an early labor, your people would’ve just finished me off anyway?”
It was almost laughable, in a dark, twisted way. Back then, who knew how many people were lurking in the shadows just waiting for her to slip up? No wonder she was still alive—it felt like pure luck.
“If you took my child for Helene’s sake, why send him to the Graysons after that? You had to know leaving my baby with Julian would keep Helene on edge for years.”
Andrew looked away, his voice quieter. “That wasn’t the original plan. But when I found out Helene had set you up, killed her own baby and blamed you… I wanted her to pay. Leaving your son with the Graysons was my way of making her suffer. I wanted her to be afraid, to have a taste of her own medicine.”
It clicked for Madeline. First he wanted revenge on her for a crime she never committed, then when the truth came out, he turned on Helene—but the cost was still her and her child.
And her child… What did any of it have to do with them?
She had to swallow her own anger and bitterness. “Did you ever stop to think about finding out what really happened before you all started plotting?”
Andrew’s words came out soft. “That’s why I’m sorry.”
“Sorry?” She let out a sharp laugh. “That’s the best you can do?”
