When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 441

It almost felt like his only intention had been to get her out of the house.

Back home, Nelly didn’t even stop to shower. She rushed straight to her room, barely remembering to shut the door behind her before she began tearing open the letters.

There were two letters from Christopher. The first was the one Jonah had delivered before, full of sarcasm and reluctance, as if he was just doing her a begrudging favor by giving her a shot at the inheritance.

But the letter she held now was nothing like that.

Every word sounded like what you’d expect from a real father, gentle and caring. He even called her his beloved daughter.

In the beginning, Christopher poured out his guilt, apologizing for all the hardships she and her mother had gone through. He sounded genuinely heartbroken that she’d had to grow up this way.

The more Nelly read, the more her emotions tumbled. Christopher explained that he’d never meant to abandon her mother. When people from the underground city came to him for help, he’d wanted to go save them right away. But something happened. He suddenly fell into a coma, got seriously ill, and by the time he woke up, it was too late. He couldn’t find them anymore.

Later, Christopher found out the truth. Felix had betrayed him. Felix didn’t want Christopher to risk everything for a woman, so he secretly drugged him, messing with his mind. For a long time, Felix was behind a lot of Christopher’s decisions, pulling the strings without him realizing it.

By the time Christopher finally understood what was happening, so much damage had already been done.

When he managed to find Nelly and her mom, her mother was already gone. Christopher knew his own health was failing too. He had worked so hard for success, but in the end, it had cost him everything. He had no family left, no one he could trust. Even Felix, his best friend, had turned on him for money and power.

It was only then that Christopher really saw how dark people could be. He felt completely alone.

He didn’t want Nelly to go back to the Watson family, to grow up in that toxic place. He wasn’t even sure he could keep her safe if she did.

So, all he could do was ask someone else to take her in, watching over her from a distance as she grew up. When she finally found a stable life with the Garland family and didn’t have to worry about food or shelter, only then did he feel a little relief.

Everything after that, Nelly already knew.

Christopher said that if he hadn’t made things difficult for her to claim the inheritance, she never would have gotten it at all. The obstacles were there to protect her from being devoured by the Watsons, to let her inherit what was rightfully hers.

Felix was ruthless. Christopher had to pretend to trust him, to make sure Felix would help Nelly get what she deserved.

But Christopher hadn’t left her defenseless. He’d put together a USB drive filled with every crime Felix had committed over the years. As soon as Nelly had the inheritance, she could expose Felix and finally get free from the Watson family.
