The cars took Nelly to a quiet, tucked-away corner of the city. Up ahead, the alley was blocked off, leaving nowhere else to go. The engines cut out and everything fell silent.
She knew this was a setup, that she’d been brought here on purpose, but Nelly wasn’t scared. She stepped out of her car without a second thought.
She trusted Jonah’s people not to hurt her.
The other car’s doors opened too. A few people stepped out, all wearing fox masks, but one face stood out immediately.
“Dr. Brown?”
Nelly’s jaw dropped. She couldn’t believe Ben had left the underground city.
Ben’s face was as cold and unreadable as ever, but still, seeing each other now felt almost comforting, like old friends crossing paths after years apart.
He waved his hand, and the others drifted away, giving them privacy.
“I heard you inherited a fortune. Congratulations.”
Nelly rolled her eyes. “That doesn’t sound like you, Dr. Brown.”
Anyone else could have congratulated her, but hearing it from him, someone who never cared about money or fame, just felt weird, almost like he was poking fun at her.
“Did you look at the USB drive?”
Nelly nodded. She held it out in her palm, offering it to him. This was the drive Jonah wanted so badly.
Seeing the fox masks made everything click. Jonah was one of the Blairs.
Now she understood why he hadn’t wanted her to look at the drive in public. If Felix’s crimes became public, the aftermath would be huge, and the Watson family would be ruined. Even if she herself was cleared, she’d never be able to live peacefully in her own country again.
After all she’d gone through to get the inheritance, Jonah couldn’t bear to see her happiness destroyed. Just like Christopher, he’d left the choice in her hands.
Christopher had always believed his daughter’s happiness was just as important as getting justice for his wife. But for Jonah, he was willing to sacrifice everything for her.
Whether it was her own conscience or her feelings for Jonah, Nelly knew what she had to do. She handed over the drive.
Ben didn’t take it right away. He looked at her, voice calm. “Are you sure this is what you want?”
Nelly nodded. “I’m sure. I just… I still have a lot of questions.”
Ben finally took the drive. “I know what you want to ask.”
It was about Jonah. About what he had done, and what exactly his connection to the Blair family was.
Ben was never one to drag things out. Since he was here, he might as well lay it all out.
Nelly already knew most of what Felix had done to the Blairs. The couple who died because of him had been Jonah’s parents.
After that, Jonah’s mother’s maid took him in and worked at the Watson family factory to support him. She eventually married Felix’s driver. When Jonah’s adoptive parents passed away, he somehow ended up as Felix’s adopted son.
Jonah only learned the truth about his past when he was grown. The Blair family still had some power and, with support from the public, they’d been searching for the truth for years and finally found Jonah.
But changing the past wasn’t easy. Even with help from powerful people, they couldn’t make things right out in the open.
When Jonah found out who he really was, he had two choices. He could go back to the Blair family and live as a hidden heir, or he could stay with the Watsons and dig up evidence about what happened to his parents.
