Err…
Darryl scratched his head and said gently with a smile, "I just met Maverick, so we're not too close."
"You just met him?"
Lolita frowned slightly; she was even more puzzled!
Darryl thought about it and began making up stories. "How should I say this? Well, Maverick had always admired you very much. He learned that you are married to an ordinary apothecary, and he was not very happy about it. He wanted to teach me a lesson, so he told you there was animosity between us!"
Darryl knew that Lolita was dubious about the whole incident that night, so he could only make up a lie to tell her.
Lolita blushed after listening to Darryl's explanation.
'Maverick is my secret admirer.'
Lolita said, "If that's the case, why did he kidnap me?"
Darryl racked his brain frantically for a reasonable theory while he said, "Maverick kidnapped you to a test if I would risk everything to save you. If I didn't come today, I would be known as a coward who doesn't deserve you. I'm here even though it is dangerous, so Maverick admires me and sees me as a reliable man, so he befriends me."
Lolita nodded suspiciously, but she still could not help taking a skeptical glance at Darryl.
'Darryl is quite thick-skinned. He praised himself unabashedly.'
Lolita recalled something, and she gave Darryl a bewildered look and asked softly, "Did you really come alone to save me tonight?"
Lolita had been unconscious earlier, so she did not know what had happened.
Darryl smiled and nodded!
"Why would you do that?" Lolita asked curiously.
Darryl sighed before he smiled and said, "Fool! Because I am your husband!"
Gasp!
Lolita was startled when she heard Darryl's reply. A trace of ripples appeared in the depths of her heart; she was a little moved and a little shy.
