Darryl was starting to get angry. ‘D*mn it. There must be something not quite right in his head. His son deserves to be punished for abandoning Princess Angeline. So why is he taking it all out on me?’
Madame Pandora looked at Darryl with disappointment. She really thought he possessed exceptional qualities, but it seemed as if she had overestimated him.
“Hush! I was there when he spoke to the dragon and I saw him doing it with my own eyes. So, stop your slandering!” said Princess Angeline as she swept her eyes angrily over every single person.
She was furious at Marshall because she would not be here if it were not for Darryl saving her yesterday.
Marshall burst out in laughter. “Princess Angeline, you’re being too naive. I do admit that what you went through was no laughing matter, but there are too many holes in your story. How is it possible for humans to communicate with a ferocious dragon? The reason it did not attack you might have been because it was not hungry and Darren took that opportunity to spin some lies to impress you. In other words, he got lucky. There’s no such thing as the beast language.”
The way he spoke made it seem that he had no doubts and was confident in his theory.
“You…” Princess Angeline was red in the face and at a loss for words. Marshall’s theory sounded logical, and it was hard to refute him. As for Darryl, he was more impressed by Marshall’s vivid imagination.
“Everyone, stop your bickering,” said the Queen softly. Immediately, everyone kept their mouth shut and the hall was so quiet that they could hear a pin drop.
“Darren, do you or do you not know the beast language?” asked the Queen. She was curious to find out too.
Darryl scratched his head and smiled bitterly. “If His Excellency insists that I was faking it, then I was faking it.”
He was not bothered to defend himself, for they would not believe him no matter what he said.
Marshall laughed coldly, believing he had caught Darryl red-handed. He pointed at Darry and shouted, “You ought to be punished for lying to the Queen!”
This had been his goal all along — to force Darryl to admit he did not know the beast language so he would be punished for lying to the Queen. He was on cloud nine for successfully taking his revenge on Darryl.
The Queen furrowed her brow, and a conflicted look grew in her eyes. She wanted to find a way out for Darryl, but doing so would turn everyone else against her. All the mayors were looking at Darryl coldly and not one of them came to his aid.
Darryl was shaking with anger as he could not believe Marshall would go through all this trouble just so the Queen would punish him.
