Debra bit the bottom of her lip gently. She hesitated for a few seconds before saying, "Skylar, it's me."
Skylar's attitude became enthusiastic as soon as he heard Debra's voice. "Hello, Miss Debra. What can I do for you this late at night?"
He was smiling from ear to ear. 'Just as I expected. It hasn't even been 24, and she is calling me. Dax must be on the verge of death right now for her to do that.'
Debra still had no idea that she was playing into Skylar's hand. "Umm, there's something I need to ask you face-to-face," she said in a small voice.
Skylar became extremely excited. "It's my honor to do anything for a beauty like you. I'll meet you in the lobby," he said without hesitation.
Soon, they were seated in the hotel's private dining room. It was late at night, so there were no other diners there. Their tables were next to the floor-to-ceiling window, giving them an uninterrupted night view of Mid City. However, Debra was in no mood to admire the scenery.
Skylar was looking at Debra with deep feeling, drunk on her beauty. "Miss Debra, do you believe in fate? This is our third meeting today. I can't help but think that the heavens have conspired for us to meet. Maybe between the two of us—"
A chill crawled up Debra's spine when she saw how Skylar looked at her. "Skylar, please have some self-respect. You know very well that I'm Darryl's woman. Besides, I have a more important matter to discuss with you."
Skylar was momentarily taken aback by her coldness. However, that did not anger him. "Very well. What is this important matter you speak of?" he asked with a smile.
Debra took a deep breath, finding it a little hard to say what she needed to say, but she came through in the end. "Dax is on the verge of death after you beat him up. I was hoping that… that you can save him."
Skylar gave it some thought, then smiled bitterly and said, "Miss Debra, I'm a man of principles. Don't you think I've done enough by sparing him his life at the Sky Park? I don't think it's very appropriate for me to save him now. Besides, you saw with your own eyes that he was the one who threw the first punch."
He seemed serious when he said all that, but a hint of cunningness flashed in his eyes. He had already expected that to happen, so he planned to drag that out as long as possible.
Debra became agitated at his reply. She bit her lip and stared fixedly at Skylar. "I understand where you're coming from, but it's better to make a friend than an enemy. Can you take the highroad just this once and save him, please?"
Debra was in a panic. She was even willing to let go of her pride if it meant that Dax would be saved.
"Miss Debra, please forgive me for being straightforward, but why do you care so much about Dax when he isn't even related to you? Not to mention that something like this was bound to happen with that hot and arrogant temper of his," Skylar said unhappily.
Debra sighed and said thoughtfully, "He's Darryl's sworn brother, after all. Can you please save him?" Her eyes were filled with anticipation.
Skylar frowned and thought vehemently, 'Dammit! It's always Darryl that and Darryl that. I'm just as good, if not better than him!'
