The black Cayenne quietly stopped at the foot of the apartment as if it had blended into the night.
The door of the elevator slowly opened with a ring and Emily pursed her lips right until they were inside and the door was closed. He stared at Simon in his slippers and blurted, "Why did you tell her we're married, Simon!?"
Addy had done her best to keep the smile on her face, although no one could dispute that she was actually grimacing.
Simon did not stop. He turned his head back and asked lazily, "Are we not?"
Emily bit her lip.
She had to admit that the apprehension and trepidation which had been haunting her an entire night was gone and she was feeling more cheerful.
She followed him into the bedroom. Once she stepped inside, Simon turned around suddenly and whisked her off her feet before tossing her into the huge bed.
He took the chance to throw himself on her to pin her down.
Emily tried to push him away, screaming, "What are you doing?"
Simon grinned at her and caught her hand. He pulled it to his lips and kissed it and watched how she winced shyly and lowered to kiss her on the lips.
"Wait, I haven't taken a bath yet!"
Emily buried her face into a pillow to evade him, panting for breath.
Simon's thin lips fell on her reddish eyelids and he said hoarsely, "Let's bath after we're done. I love taking baths with you!"
Emily's voice trembled. "Ah, don't..."
"How can we not work hard if we want a baby?" Simon smiled wickedly, his fingertips lightly tapped on her eyebrows and eyes, his eyes burning with determination. "That was your promise, Mrs. Chin! No backing out now!"
The rapturous night went out outside with the moans and grunts from the man and woman inside.
Busy work from sunrise to sundown every day allowed time to pass quickly in the city. Saturday came and Emily was calling for a cab to go to the nursing home with some fruits.
In the past three and a half years, the old woman had recovered very well and she would visit her whenever she found time during the weekend.
The caregiver knew her. As soon as she arrived, the caregiver took the fruits from her and smiled warmly, "Mrs. Chin. She's just upstairs in her bedroom!"
"Sure!" Emily replied with a smile.
Emily hung her coat and walked up the stairs. The bedroom door was ajar with cheery sunlight pouring in from the open windows, casting a huge shiny pond of light at the center of the corridor.
Before she reached the door, Emily heard the elderly woman's jovial giggles.
Her lips curled into a smile spontaneously. She spun around the corner at the door and before her hand could knock on the door, she found that Grandma was not alone; beside her was an all too familiar figure of a thin young woman with long hair and she was looking at the photo albums with Grandma, sharing a good time together.
The feeling of deja vu struck her. She used to sit on a stool too, looking through Simon's old pictures with Grandma.
Emily stood there, utterly dazed with her hand still in mid- air, not knowing whether she should just withdraw or go in.
