When Simon finished almost half a pack of cigarettes in succession, Charlie stepped forward and stopped him from smoking.
He opened the window to get out of the cigarette smoke and then walked out of the smoking area.
He walked toward Emily's ward with slow, heavy steps as if his feet were filled with lead.
Finally, he arrived at the door of the ward. When his big hand touched the door handle, he saw that Emily's eyelashes began to tremble. After a while, she slowly opened her eyes with effort.
She was awake...
Simon's Adam's apple moved slightly, and he slowly pushed open the door of the ward.
"Wendy, my baby, is it gone?"
The moment he stepped in, he heard her asking in a hoarse voice.
The thought of their dead baby made Simon's heart sore, and his chest rose and fell violently a few times as he breathed deeply to calm himself down. Though he controlled his emotions now, he could not hide the sadness in his peach blossom eyes.
Emily whispered with a gentle voice as if she was afraid of startling something.
In particular, she attentively gazed into Wendy's eyes with hope as if she were staring at the last ray of light left in the sky before sunset. It seemed that the light of hope would disappear in the blink of an eye...
When Wendy nodded, Emily's eyes suddenly dimmed.
Emily raised her hand with a needle inserted into it and touched her belly, which was flat. How could she feel anything? Her baby had left her belly forever.
However, she still moved her hands back and forth on her belly for some time. This was the dead end of her last hope. Then, she closed her eyes and said desperately, "Well, never mind. Let the past be the past."
Simon strode forward, bent down, and held her hands carefully. His amorous eyes were no longer lethargic. Instead, there was some restrained pain and bitterness in his eyes. "Emily, we're still young, and we can have more children in the future..."
It was not that he did not know how to comfort others, but he seemed to have lost the power of speech when facing Emily.
Simon had witnessed many deaths as a doctor, but he had never been so panicked and depressed.
Hearing his words, Emily opened her eyes again and smiled gently. She also held his hand and pressed it on her lower abdomen. "Simon, you know, I actually had the idea of secretly giving birth to the baby at the beginning, but you found out the truth later! I still remember how furious you were at that time. You warned me not to take your baby away!"
"I didn't expect that our baby would leave me like this... It is gone. None of us wants this result, but don't be too sad. Perhaps, you and I are not supposed to share a future with it! However, I am glad that I didn't remarry you. It saves me a lot of trouble!"
"Stop it!" Simon roared depressingly.
Her reaction was different from what he had expected. He thought that after she woke up and learned that the baby was gone, she would break down.
However, she appeared to be calmer than him! She did not cry, nor did she show any strong emotions as if she was not the person who lost her baby and just came out of the operating room. Her calmness scared him...
Simon slowly clenched his drooping hands, his heart sinking.
He knew that losing a baby was quite painful, so his heart wrenched as he spotted the deathly stillness in her eyes.
"Okay, I stop. It happens that I don't have much strength. Saying these words has already exhausted me." After this, Emily took two deep breaths, though her expression was still glacial.
Then, she closed her eyes again and gently turned her back on him.
"Simon Chin..."
Suddenly, Emily called out softly.
