It turned out that Lianne had secretly called the cops amidst the chaos just now. It was smart of her to do so!
Sighing in relief, I went over to help Kevin up. He was covered in bruises and cuts.
"Hang on, Kevin! We'll take you to the hospital!" I told him.
Kevin smiled weakly and muttered, "I'm fine. It's not like I'd die from a small injury like this. I can take it."
With much difficulty, he pushed himself up from the ground.
"Evelyn, we were lucky this time," he said. "But you still need to keep an eye out for Carlos, that psychopath. He won't give up that easily."
I nodded. I had mixed feelings about this. After what happened tonight, I finally knew what kind of person Carlos was.
I never thought that there would be such an atrocious and perilous side behind the glamorous facade of the fashion circle.
The cops arrived and interrogated us about what happened. Then, they recorded the case in great detail. Upon seeing the state Kevin was in, frowns creased their foreheads.
"Things aren't that simple with this Carlos since he had the guts to assault you three here in the streets," said one of the cops. "We'll look into this case thoroughly."
I nodded, content with how the cops were handling the matter. This incident was no small matter, so the authorities would take note of it.
After the cops left, Lianne and I took Kevin to the hospital. Fortunately, he wasn't gravely injured, and the doctor only needed to tend to his injuries for a while.
As I sat beside Kevin's bed in the ward, I started to feel sorry for him. Kevin wouldn't have had to go through all this if I hadn't provoked Carlos.
He had my back and risked his life to protect me, but I didn't know how to repay him.
He seemed to know that I was blaming myself for what happened, though. He patted my hand and said, "Evelyn, stop overthinking it. You're my friend. Of course, I'll have your back!"
