After hanging up the phone, James helped Delilah up and said, “Let’s go.”
“Mhm.” Delilah nodded and left the bar alongside James.
Meanwhile, Maxine followed close behind.
After leaving the bar, James pulled his phone out and called Madelyn.
“I’m sorry, the number you have dialed is not available.”
James frowned. “Huh, weird…”
Maxine said, “The dynamics in the Capital are complex. All families and forces have informants everywhere. It’s only natural for her to be extra cautious. After all, she’ll be dead if she’s discovered. Let’s return for now and wait for another opportunity to show itself.”
James did not think much about it.
Looking at Delilah, he asked, “Have you eaten?”
Delilah shook her head.
James brought her to a nearby restaurant and requested a private room.
In the private room, James asked, “What happened? How did you end up singing at a bar?”
Delilah was still wearing James’ jacket. Taking a sip of a glass of warm water, she said, “My family went bankrupt. My stepfather disappeared without a trace, leaving my mother with a pile of debt. Though we’ve pawned everything in the house, not to mention that I’ve used up all of my savings to repay the debts, we still owe a great amount of debt. Since I’ve been canceled, I have no choice but to sing in a bar.”
James asked, “How much do you owe?”
“Around a few hundred million.” Delilah was not too sure herself.
After all, these were debts owed by his stepfather.
“That much?” James frowned and asked, “What does your stepfather do for a living?”
Delilah said, “He runs a tech business, so he should be a pretty rich guy with assets totaling a few billion dollars. I heard from my mom that he antagonized some big shots. That’s why his company went bankrupt and he disappeared without a trace.”
“What’s the name of the company? I’ll investigate the matter.”
“Blue Tech Corporation.”
James pulled out his phone and called a number. “Investigate the reason Blue Tech Corporation went bankrupt and find out the whereabouts of its owner.”
“Thank you, Dragon General.” Delilah was thankful.
