With regards to cabinet members, Clifford remained the secretary and his deputy was still Zion Lucas. Along with eight other cabinet members, the group of ten would assist the new president in governing the nation.
Hansel shook Garrett's hand firmly in the midst of resounding applause and countless camera flashings while Garrett uttered the words under his breath, “Thank you.”
Hansel smiled in return. “The fate of the nation and its people is officially in your hands now. Don't disappoint us.”
From afar, Clifford's eyes darkened and turned inexplicable while he watched Garrett address the spectators as the newly installed President of Eurasia.
The beginning of Garrett's speech was within everyone's expectations. However, five minutes into his speech, he dropped the biggest bomb that startled every occupant in that conference room that he intended to re-introduce the
position of the Chief Military Governor, whose job was to protect and strengthen Eurasia!
A Chief Military Governor!
This unexpected announcement had everyone's jaw dropping to the floor. Government representatives, journalists, the audience of the live TV broadcast... Everyone was stunned.
The shock was understandable, as the nation used to have this position before it was rendered obsolete many years ago.
The person who held this title was afforded the highest military command across the nation. At least this had been the case until a few decades ago when the then-President decided to dissolve this position and take over the military power himself.
In other words, the past few presidents had been both the government's chief administrator and commander-in-chief of the military.
Therefore, when Garrett announced his plan to reenact the post of the Chief Military Governor and appoint someone he trusted to fill this role, everyone was surprised.
The scenario of presidents reclaiming military power was regularly witnessed in countries all over the world. Never had one done the opposite to relinquish such power.
The attendants in the conference hall and those in front of the TV were holding their breaths for such a massive executive order from a new President.
The first person to recover from the bewilderment was Clifford, who stood up and spoke out loudly, “President Woods, the position of Chief Military Governor has been rendered obsolete for quite some time. May I suggest that we consult all the cabinet members before deciding whether to reenact the role?”
Garrett looked at Clifford and replied in a calm manner, “This decision was not made impromptu; I have given this matter considerable thought before coming to this resolve.”
The man of the hour continued his address to the press. “Those of you who are familiar with my political resume will know that my expertise and achievements lie with administrative and governance work, whereas military and defence are my weak spots.
