Upon hearing about Nathan's arrival, Sage and his family rushed out of the hotel.
Shae, being the conceited woman she was, thought that Sage was there to welcome her.
She smugly approached him with her bodyguards in tow. She simpered and said, “Oh, General Tomlinson, you're too courteous! It's your fortieth birthday today! It's simply not right for you to come all this way to greet me.”
While Shae appeared bashful on the surface, her mind raced with a vastly different sentiment. My family has been planning to unify the family with the Chief Military Governor through marriage. Good on Sage for realizing that I'll be his superior's wife and having the foresight to welcome me personally
However, what happened next was a slap in the face for Shae.
Sage exited the hotel with his entourage and made a beeline for Nathan. He brushed past Shae without even sparing a glance in her direction as if she did not exist.
“General, I can't believe you made it! It's such an honor to have you at my birthday banquet!”
The onlookers were befuddled when they saw how Sage treated Nathan with such respect despite Nathan's downfall.
Shae looked like she had smelled something putrid, her features twisted in an ugly grimace.
After all, she had assumed that Sage was there to greet her, but the general ignore her completely and gave Nathan a warm reception instead.
She was mortified.
Her blood boiled as she thought, How dare you, Sage Tomlinson. I am the bride-to-be of the Chief Military Governor, and when the time comes, I'll be your superior! But instead of trying your best to curry favor with me, you're sucking up to Nathan? Are you insane? Just wait till I marry the Chief Military Governor; I'll make sure that you regret your actions today!
Nathan's lips curved upwards when he noticed Shae's apparent displeasure.
“General Tomlinson, you're the pillar of our army and the pride of our country! I wouldn't miss your fortieth birthday for the world. I hope that my presence is not bothersome,” Nathan said nonchalantly.
A broad grin stretched across Sage's face when he heard Nathan's generous compliment.
“No, not at all! Please, come this way, General Cross,” Sage hurriedly replied.
With that, Nathan was escorted into the hotel by Sage and his family.
Meanwhile, humiliation got the better of Shae as she stalked toward Sage and yelled, “General
Tomlinson!”
Sage seemed to notice Shae for the first time. “Oh, hello. You're Ms. Shae, the daughter of the Davier family, right?”
Shae tilted her dainty face and declared pompously, “General Tomlinson, my family sent me to wish you a happy birthday on their behalf.”
“Thank you, Ms. Shae. Please send my regards to your family, especially Mr. Clifford Davier,” Sage responded graciously.
Shae took note of Sage's affable tone and deduced that Sage was not aware of her arrival earlier. If he had known that I was here, he wouldn't have slighted me and rushed to please Nathan.
