Nathan kept quiet for a few seconds before asking calmly, “What favor?”
Catherine flipped her beautiful hair a little. With a skin-deep grin on, she said, “There's a guy behind me. He's spying on us, isn't he?”
Nathan discreetly checked, then replied calmly, “Yes, he is. It's the commander-in-chief of Ferropene, Reno. He's acting like he's drinking nonchalantly, but his eyes kept secretly turning to us. I think he's into you.”
Catherine immediately replied, “But I am not interested in him. In fact, I have had it with his harassment, and I want to be rid of him. The thing is, my country is on good terms with his country, and as the Duchess, it's inappropriate for me to be violent toward him...”
“So you want me to help you get rid of him?”
Catherine smiled and said, “It's so much easier talking to someone with a brain. How about we make a deal?”
Nathan shook his head and answered, “The answer's no. I am not interested in making the deal with you. I will investigate and find Clifford eventually, so I won't be troubling you for anything, Duchess.”
After saying his piece, Nathan turned around to leave.
Catherine, however, added nonchalantly, “You're right. Your investigation will bear fruit eventually, and you will find him. Though, Ariarica has already sent their men over to discuss terms with Clifford. They want to recruit him, and the only reason he hasn't already gone with them is that he's trying to get a better deal. There's no saying whether your men will find him before he moves to Ariarica. If he made it over, do you think it'd still be a piece of cake for you to capture him when Ariarica's forces are protecting him? Also, I'm guessing it will be a heavy burden on your country if Clifford works with Ariarica.”
Nathan frowned.
Catherine smiled and added, “Mr. Cross, we'll both benefit greatly from this cooperation.”
Nathan weighed his options before agreeing to those terms. “Fine, I'll help you deal with Reno, but you must tell me where Clifford is hiding.”
Catherine replied with a smile, “Deal!”
Some distance away...
Reno had been staring at Nathan and Catherine for a while, but he was too far away to hear what
the two of them were talking about.
He did, however, notice Catherine stopping Nathan from leaving several times.
In the end, he saw that Catherine and Nathan were getting closer and more at ease with each other. Catherine's smile even turned bright as day by then.
Jealousy and fury swelled up in Reno's heart.
B*tch! cussed Reno internally.
