Massimo said, “Mr. Cross, I think you've let them off too easily. Those guys have been extorting money from passersby. They should be severely punished.”
Nathan shook his head. “I can't do that. After the outbreak of the blood virus and the vampires' invasion, Adrune suffered great losses. Many countries are going through an economic crisis, yet they still have to deploy their armies to fight the vampires. Some countries are also struggling to pay their soldiers. Given such conditions, it's inevitable that those guys from Steel Wings are trying to make money on the side.”
Nathan looked at everyone. “If I punish them more severely, they will start to rebel. If these guys turn against us, who will fight the vampires?”
Shadow Widow and the men exchanged looks after hearing Nathan's reasons, thinking what he said made sense. Nathan continued, “We can give them a warning but we can't go overboard.” All of them could only nod in agreement. However, some of them were still not convinced.
“Does that mean that the bounty hunters like us and the refugees have to suffer?” Nathan tried to calm these men down.
“The vampires are the ones who caused this calamity. Half of Adrune's territory has fallen, and countless people have been sacrificed. There are now many destitute and homeless people. Who isn't suffering? Everyone is suffering. Hence, it's no use complaining. Instead, we must unite and fight the vampires together. To restore peace to the world, it is imperative to eradicate the vampires entirely. Only then can our lives get better.” Shadow Widow chuckled.
“We are simple folks. We won't understand these grand principles. We're here because we want to follow you, Mr. Cross. Can you take us in?”
Nathan realized the real purpose of their visit. Shadow Widow decided to ally herself with Nathan. She placed her hopes of rebuilding her homeland in him. On the other hand, Massimo and the other bounty hunters found Nathan to be an upright person. They were impressed by his strength and his charm. They realized that since they were already making money by hunting vampires, they might as well work for Nathan and earn money. When Nathan learned that Shadow Widow and the bounty hunters wanted to follow him to earn a living, he was inclined to turn them down. Shadow Widow had thousands of subordinates. Massimo and the rest of the bounty hunters represented a team of bounty hunters each. There could be thousands or tens of thousands of them. It would cost a lot of money if Nathan kept them with him. He was about to reject them diplomatically when he suddenly remembered something. Narrowing his eyes, he soon fell into deep thought.
Finally, he said slowly, “I suppose there must be quite a lot of you?”
Shadow Widow replied, “I have more than a thousand subordinates. If we include the bounty hunter teams, there are around ten thousand people.”
Nathan said, “I might be able to offer you jobs. You can work for me. However, I need some time to think over this matter. Give me two days. I'll give you a reply after two days. Is that okay?”
Shadow Widow exchanged glances with Massimo and the other bounty hunters before replying, “Okay. We'll wait for your news in two days. We are happy to give you twenty days if you need.”
Nathan smiled and nodded. “All right, why don't you find a place to stay in Salinsburgh for the time being? Once I come to a decision, I'll send someone to look for you.” Shadow Widow was pleased.
“Okay, we'll take our leave for now. We look forward to your good news, Mr. Cross.”
After saying that, the group bid Nathan farewell and left. After their visit, an anxious Colin said, “Mr. Cross, are you mad? These guys are bounty hunters. If you hire them, you still have to pay them ten thousand Ariarican currency every day, even if they do not do anything. If there's a battle, we'll have to pay them even more. Hiring them will cost us at least one hundred million Ariarican currency per month. It's equivalent to several hundred million Eurasian currency. Mr. Cross, we shouldn't be spending our money this way.”
Nathan smiled and assured him. “Colin, do you think I don't know this?”
Taken aback, Colin asked, “Then Mr. Cross, why do you still-” Nathan gave a mysterious smile.
“I have other plans for these people. You don't have to worry about it.” Colin was puzzled. He did not know what Nathan had up his sleeves.
