Shattered Illusions: Love, Lies, and Redemption ( Lizetta ) novel Chapter 268

Chapter 268

Got shipped off to be the neighborhood committee boy, huh?

Cedric was grinding his teeth, thinking Remington had better hold the fort and not chase after his wife to the airport

He thought, If he did, he’d be nothing but a lovesick puppy, even more whipped than I was!”

Cedric left, and Remington kept staring at the report in front of him, his expression as still as water

But in just a mernent, he yanked over a stack of planning documents next to him, getting more irritated the more he looked at them

Finally, Remington couldn’t keep up the facade of calm, raising his hand to rub his forehead and pushing away all the papers in front of him

He leaned back in his chair, yanking his tie loose with a forceful tug

After a bit, he leaned forward to open a drawer and reached for the diary at the very bottom

But as soon as his fingers touched the leather cover, he stopped short, kicking the drawer shut in a fit of agitation

Cedric said there were no big issues between him and Lizetta, told him to clear up the whole Evelina thing

Ha, Evelina’s kid wasn’t his, he’d said that plenty of times

Lizetta knew it, too, but did she ever care

His wife didn’t love him and was hellbent on divorcethat was the real issue

In all this time, wasn’t it clear enough he didn’t want to let go of the marriage, that he wanted to hold on

But his little girl had a heart of stone; she didn’t give a damn

The birdie had grown up, its wings had hardened; it yearned for the world outside

Remington didn’t believe that going to the airport now, after holding onto her for a month, would change her mind

Back in the day, he’d misunderstood her drugging him as an attempt to stay with the Dashiell family and had used that as an excuse to keep her trapped in marriage

But now, she was innocent in that old affair, she was miserable with the Dashiell family, almost hating him

When she asked him to be kind to her one last time, that meant letting her go

He still remembered her expression then, so pained and pleading, so pale and fragile

What was he supposed to do if not let go

Was he supposed to just watch her suffocate, wither away before his eyes

But Cedric’s words had thrown Remington into complete disarray, making him more agitated and frantic than ever

He felt that if he really let Lizetta go today, it might just be like Cedric said: the next time they met would be to collect their divorce

papers

She would no longer be his Mrs. Dashiell; she could openly be with any man

Just thinking about that scenario made Remington feel like he was being pierced by a thousand arrows, an unbearable pain that almost drove him mad

But he hadn’t done nothing; he’d left a glimmer of hope for their marriage

Whether it worked out or not, he’d leave it up to fate

Thinking this, Remington suddenly pushed back his chair, stood up, and walked over to the floortoceiling window to light a cigarette

Halfway through his smoke, Remington left his office and commanded in a deep voice, Call a meeting with the planning department.”

Instantly, the entire secretarial department sprang into action

At noon, Remington went to Savory Seasons Café as planned for lunch with President Winters of NexGen Technologies
