Sabrina nodded hesitantly. "Did...did I do something wrong?"
She was instantly overwhelmed by a feeling like something horrible was about to happen. Nine years ago, this was exactly how she had been taken away out of the blue when she was in her second year of college.
"It's still about the case nine years ago. The family of the victim has found you and intends on pressing charges again." 1
Sabrina stayed silent.
"That's her! That's her! God damn it, it took me and my son so long to hunt you down! You man-stealing vixen, you wronged us and now you want to shift the blame?" A mid-aged woman roared at her.
Sabrina was stunned, as she recognized the woman. It was the same middle-aged woman who clawed at her car door to take one look at her before leaving.
"Why you...!" At that moment, she was so furious that she was struggling to get words out.
"Nine years ago, you insisted that my man destroyed you, but he is such a good and honest man. He was old enough to be your father and we have a couple of children together. How could he possibly do such a thing to you?"
Sabrina felt like murdering someone at the mention of the incident nine years ago. Nine years ago, she was still in college! Lincoln and Jade, who never cared for her at all, had suddenly come to see her and bought her a new dress, saying something along the lines of wanting to celebrate her birthday and such. The couple had brought her to the crime scene and gave her a drink. Not knowing what was in that drink, Sabrina passed out not long after drinking it. When she woke up, she had already become a murderer. It wasn't even attempted murder, but manslaughter.
Everything including the footprints and fingerprints o n the weapon pointed directly to Sabrina. Even footage of the surveillance camera supported the claim that it was Sabrina who did it, because the clothes and hair looked the same. With all the evidence in place, she couldn't even defend herself. It was at that very moment, Sabrina realized that the rare kindness that Lincoln and Jade had shown her for buying her clothes and celebrating her birthday, were all nothing but a trap. A well-planned trap. They wanted Sabrina to be the scapegoat for Selene. The trap was well thought out with close to no loose ends a t all. On top of that, Sabrina was young. She was heartbroken and had no clue as to how she was supposed to defend herself. She had always longed to call Lincoln "dad" like Selene did. In order to be acknowledged by him, Sabrina, a child who transferred from an undeveloped village, fought her way into the top three of her year from being last. The university that she had enrolled in was also one of the elite schools of the city, but even so, Lincoln never acknowledged her. Instead, he framed her for murder. Sabrina was devastated at the time to the point that death seemed to be the only way out.
It had been nine years since that incident. Had it happened now, Sabrina wouldn't have stood by and let them do whatever they wanted with her. She looked into the eyes of the middle-aged woman in her way and said, "Lady, I don't know who your husband i s, but even if you are the wife of that man from all those years ago, I have spent my time in prison for it. I t has been nine years already. Do you really think that it's okay for you to cling onto this?"
"Why wouldn't it be?? Nine years aside, even if it's been twenty years, you still have to pay for what you had done in the past," the woman roared. "How could we let a vile woman like you walk among us? I've heard that you have taken more than one life in the past!"
Sabrina paused for a moment, before lifting her gaze t o look at the gathering crowd. Suddenly, she spotted Lincoln standing in the crowd, along with the old Master Shaw.
'I see! It's yet another trap they put together intricately. They have once again thrown an invisible net towards me in hope to trap me, so that I am left with nowhere to run,’ she thought. Sabrina dazedly realized that her father-in-law's sudden visit this morning and his sudden anger and confrontation towards her and Sebastian must have been one of the many steps in the old Master Shaw's plan.
