The smile on Jennie's face widened. "Oh my, Marcus, Auntie had too many girl-friends back then, so many that I could barely count. From primary school to university, there had always been classmates that fought to be my girl-friends. Sigh...which little girlfriend of mine are you referring to, Marcus?"
Marcus smiled. "I...I was just asking out of curiosity about all the fun things that happened in your childhood!"
"Oh yes, yes, my entire childhood was care-free," she responded, lamenting.
Marcus threw his head back and squeezed his eyes shut, trying as hard as he could to suppress his anger. When he opened his eyes, he saw the anxiety and desperation in his father's expression. Marcus knew what his father was trying to say. She was his father's cousin, after all, so Marcus swallowed his anger.
Luckily, Jennie did not continue on, perhaps because she noticed that Marcus was irritated, or maybe the fact that she was not welcomed by this family. She soon left without even staying for lunch.
After sending the three out the gate of the Shaw residence, Marcus turned to his parents with displeasure written all over his face. "Isn't it enough that you guys are at home to welcome the guests?
Why do I have to come back? I just wanted to try the
dumplings my aunt made, is that too much to ask?"
Seeing how furious her son was, Mrs. Shaw immediately went closer to comfort him. "We didn't think of getting you to come back, Marcus, but Lori insisted on calling you. We've been avoiding her for a week now, it's not like we can keep that up forever, right?"
His father sighed moodily. "Marcus, your Aunt Jennie was right. She grew up here in our home. Your grandmother lost a daughter before and had been plagued with mental illness ever since, your Aunt Jennie kept her company for quite some time."
Marcus instantly caved. "I'm sorry, Dad..." Just as he said those words, his phone rang again. When he glanced over and realized that it was from Lori again, he was agitated beyond words. He wished he could smash his phone to bits.
