Which is why she could not drag Noah and his mother down with her.
To her surprise, Noah said, "It's our lives! If that Poole guy dares to kill you, I will beat him to death with my backhoe. We already have nothing, so why should we b e afraid of him??"
Jane shook her head in tears. "You don't understand, Noah. That man is merciless. You two don't have to die with me."
Noah gave her a bitter smile. "You are wrong, Jane. I... Ever since I lost my son, I didn't want to live. The only reason I am alive is because I still have my mother, but how long does she have left? Back when we were staying in the mountains of South City, I planned on commiting suicide once my mother died of old age because I couldn't bear to live by myself. Jane, it was you and your unborn child that gave my widowed mother and this mid-aged man who lost a son something to look forward to. What do we have to live for if you are gone?"
"If we can't escape death, we might as well face it together. We need to stay together wherever we go so that we can take care of each other. If one day, there's truly no way to run, we will die together and keep each other company in the afterlife, okay?" Noah said
sincerely.
Jane ran into Noah's arms. "Noah, you are so kind to m e. I could never repay you."
Noah chuckled. "I don't need you to repay me. We are one family, so we are supposed to stick together, alive or dead."
"We will stay together forever," Jane agreed in tears.
The three hugged onto one another and broke down in tears. After crying her fill, Jane suggested, "We can't stay in this town any longer, Noah. I already saw Alex's men here looking for me. They will find us one day. I want to hide in a city with a bigger population s o that it will be more difficult for them to search for m e. I've thought it through; I feel like the closer I am to Alex, the harder it will be for him to find me because h e never would have thought that I would be this bold."
Noah agreed to what Jane said and the three immediately leaped into action to gather up their belongings and headed West with Noah driving the rickshaw they had just bought. They had wanted to go to Kidon City, only to realize on the way there that the police force in Kidon City was extremely strict, and that they would not allow entry with a rickshaw. After giving it some thoughts, they settled down in the ocean-side city that overlooked Kidon City across the ocean. The city was highly populated and therefore relatively developed. They planned to stay to work and earn some savings before they could sell the rickshaw and move on to Kidon City. They had only been there for a week. Though the city was bustling, it was not that easy for them to find a job. Both Jane and Noah were unable to find one after a week of trying; it was especially challenging for a woman who was four months into her pregnancy like Jane, and finding a job would have been difficult no matter where she was. On top of that, she used to focus on cooking at home, tending to Alex and accompanying him to all sorts of parties, and had no other skills to show for. However, the two did not get disheartened. They were willing to work, no matter how exhausted or filthy they might get, as long as there was work.
One day, the two split up to find jobs and had promised one another to meet underneath the bridge a t city center if they could not find a job by noon because, under the bridge, there was a hole that they used to place their meals in the morning. They had wrapped the food in cotton blankets to prevent it from getting cold. That way, they would not have to spend extra money on food and could save it up.
At noon, Jane and Noah met up in time for lunch underneath the bridge. Jane fed Noah a spoonful of mashed potato and said, "We might not have found our jobs yet, but we still have to eat, Noah. We will starve if we miss a meal. Try this mashed potato.
Mom made it with butter in it this morning. It kind of tastes like meat."
Noah took a bite of the mashed potato and the two looked at one another with a smile of sheer happiness and contentment.
Alex, who drove for a day and a night, stared blankly at the scene.
