"Oh, okay, we... We will leave right now!"
Jane and Noah helped each other up and just as the two had taken a step to leave, Jane suddenly paused and said, "Wait."
"What's wrong?" Noah asked.
"Food. Our food. The food the owner gave us, Noah. I won't be able to work this job as Master Alex is asking us to leave this city. We need to eat something before we leave, my food..."
It was only then that Jane had finally remembered the food in her pouch. She turned around abruptly and stared at the leftovers that she had thrown to the ground. The food in the pouch had been liquid and had spilled all over the ground, leaving nothing much inside the pouch. Even so, Jane could not bring herself to throw it away. After spending seven years b y Alex's side, she had forgotten how hard life could be, but back when she was imprisoned by her husband, she had once been starved for three whole days, and even pet food would have tasted like heaven back then. When she was on the run with Noah, the three of them were starving deep in the mountain and even tried eating leaves off willows. And now, all the food i n that pouch had been tasty dishes; so what if it was leftover or with someone else's saliva on it? All they needed to do was to take it home to heat it through
and disinfect it.
Being able to be with Noah and his mother, to keep her unborn child and to enjoy the leftovers the restaurant owner gave her for free described the happiest life Jane would picture. Not bothering with the fact that Alex was still standing there and that there were plenty of people watching her, she had no regard for her integrity; even if she had been a person of integrity, all that was lost when she kneeled before Alex in tears earlier. At that moment, Jane rushed over to the leftovers she threw to the ground without hesitation and mumbled pitifully, "Noah, food, our food"
Noah paused for a few moments before saying," Jane, let's go!"
Jane turned to look at Noah pathetically. "I'm hungry, Noah, and my baby needs to eat too. Look, the food that's in the pouch is still edible. There's also two pieces of chicken on the floor. Do you have any tissue? We can wrap those up and wash them when we head back home...
Everyone at the scene, including Noah and Alex were rendered speechless.
Seeing that Noah would not move, Jane went ahead to pick the food up by herself. She picked up the two chicken drumsticks poking out of the pouch before realizing there was nowhere to put them, and directly placed them into her pocket. She then picked up what was left in the pouch and sighed regrettably.
Behind her, tears began falling from Garrett's eyes again, along with a few other men. Jane was known to be Alex's one and only lover, and everyone knew just how elegant and understanding she was. To see how washed-up she had become had overwhelmed them with mixed feelings. Many even thought to themselves, 'You are so blind, Master Alex! How could you be blinded by that garbage Lily Parker? How could you toss such a great lover out?? It was so easy for you to toss her out! How could you possibly get her back after that? Sigh!'
Alex's subordinates sighed in their minds but no one dared to say anything. They all watched bitterly as Jane picked the leftovers off the ground, but Jane had not noticed the eyes on her until a pair of feet appeared before her.
She lifted her chin to look at Alex and swallowed. "I will leave immediately once I pick the food up."
Alex bent down and presented Jane with a card. "Wh--What is this?" she asked.
