"Or else!"
Linda could feel her legs giving in to the pressure. " Director, I...where on earth am I going to find ten thousand dollars?" she pleaded, on the brink of tears." My boyfriend has just broken up with me so I won't be getting any allowance from him anymore. I have to pay the loan for my car and my apartment all by myself now, and the twenty thousand I am earning each month isn't even enough for those. I don't have any savings for this."
The Design Director rolled her eyes at Linda and considered the situation. The entire Design Department would have to suffer the consequences if they failed to resolve the situation. She sighed heavily and rolled her eyes at Linda again, before looking over at Sabrina.
"Sabrina, I know you had been mistreated last week. This is what I'll propose, Linda will personally owe you ten thousand dollars, but she is obviously incapable of paying you right now. You need to come with me to the office later, I will talk to the Finance Department and have them pay you first. How does that sound?" she offered sincerely.
"Sure," Sabrina agreed calmly. She didn't care as long a s she had the money. It wasn't that she couldn't help voluntarily, but that depended heavily as to who she
would be doing that for. She had only worked in this company for two days and had been bullied wherever she went. Now that she was fired, it was only reasonable for her to be paid to resolve the issue for a company that she no longer worked for.
"Great! So can you...figure out a way to resolve this?" asked the Director gingerly.
"Yeah! Why don't you go on ahead and tell us what brilliant solution you have?" Linda questioned sharply, "or were you just bluffing?"
All eyes were on Sabrina, as the members of the Design Department waited with anticipation. If Sabrina failed to provide a viable solution, they would be the first to skin her alive.
"It's very simple, actually." Sabrina smiled casually and explained. "You just need to substitute the hollow brick with solid ones to increase the bearing capacity by fifty percent, so that the side where there had been miscalculation will be relieved of the weight by half, and that should resolve most of the issue. Afterward, you will only have to install two pillars on two ends at the ninety degree point on that side to strengthen it, and there you have it."
This sort of situation rarely occurred in large-scale construction, therefore it was understandable that the constructors failed to come up with such a solution. Since the issue had already manifested, this was the only way to reverse the effect.
Throughout the six years Sabrina had stayed in
Ciarrai County, there had been countless minor projects for small housing or buildings which did not have the luxury of being monitored by an architectural designer. They simply had to improvise and resolve every problem one at a time as they emerged, so she did not consider the current incident that big of an issue. However, had Sabrina been assigned to draw the blueprint, she would have foreseen the issue and avoided it based on her previous experience.
The Design Director was impressed that Sabrina had easily solved a problem that had proven to be challenging for everyone in the office. She took Sabrina's hand gratefully and said, "Sabrina, I didn't know you were this well-versed in the architecture field. Oh, we have been so blind!" 1
"It's nothing, really." Sabrina smiled gently in response. "I just had more experience on construction work from the time I spent in different sites, that's all. So, Director, about the remuneration..."
"Oh, of course, the money! Come along with me to the office so I can have that arranged for you," the Design Director replied, all the while contemplating how she could convince Sabrina to stay in the company.
Once the problem was resolved, the group returned to the office. Only this time, Sabrina was seated in the same private vehicle as the Design Director instead of the bus with the others. Sabrina noticed that there was a luxurious sports car that was parked outside the office building upon arrival. 1
"Sabrina, did the entire Design Department head out for lunch?" Ryan stepped out from the sports car and greeted her passionately.
