"Oh." Sabrina flushed and went back to being silent. She was certain that Sebastian was going to have full power over the arrangement of such an important occasion, she simply needed to make an appearance. Sabrina prided herself over being someone who knew her place and what was required of her, she would remain quiet like the trophy wife everyone expected her to be.
She set her cutleries down after finishing her meal and said to Sebastian, "If you don't have anything else to attend to, spend some time with Aino. She hadn't had the chance to play with her father for days. You have been so successful in spoiling her that she doesn't even want to play simple games with me anymore. She apparently prefers spending time on brain teasers with you. I'm going to get some work done while you play with her. There are quite a few blueprints that I need to draw up."
Sebastian set his fork down as well and asked curiously, "Do you like your job?"
"Of course I do!" she responded.
"To what extent?"
"Do you want an honest answer?"
"Obviously." 1
Sabrina took a deep breath as though she was
preparing herself, before explaining, "Ever since I was a child, my only dream was to finish college, become a n expert in something and start working. I know that once I start working, I will be able to leave the Lynn Family and will no longer have to depend on anyone. I can make ends meet for myself and my mother. I kept telling myself that when given the chance, I am going t o work harder than anyone else. I've always enjoyed having a job, the idea of supporting myself and earning my own money, so that I can finally go home t o tell my mother's spirit that I'm finally independent and have a job of my own. I personally think that having a job provides people with purpose and therefore, a sense of security."
Sabrina had always suffered from the lack of security. Back when she was fostered by the Lynn Family, she was despised everywhere she went. She was dragged t o prison shortly after finishing college; then released for a few months only to face years of assassination. Struggles were the only element that was constant in her life, which was why she longed to earn her place i n the world with hard work in exchange for a peaceful life. Only then would she truly feel safe. 1
Reminded by the thought of visiting her mother's grave, Sabrina lifted her head and looked directly at Sebastian. "A week ago, you gave me a card with five million dollars in it and said it was compensation. I had thought that it was meant to compensate for the insult and suffering Emma was going to throw my way. What was it for, actually?"
Up until then, Sabrina did not dare to touch the five million dollars he had given her.
"For you. Call it pocket money, if you may," he explained.
"Um..." Five million dollars as pocket money? Had she become rich without realizing it? Her eyes widened in surprise as she squeaked, "So...so you are not taking it back?"
"No," he snorted. What an unsophisticated woman she was! Fretting over something as insignificant as five million dollars, treating it like the Pandora box. Had it been any other woman in the South City who received five million dollars from Sebastian, they would have passed out in joy. Yet here Sabrina was, standing there with that expression like she didn't know what t o think of it. No wonder Nigel called her a country girl. She was so deprived of money in her life that even when she received a large amount of money, she couldn't bring herself to believe it, let alone use it.
"Can I withdraw a small amount out and make a trip back home, then?" she blurted out after struggling for a while. The idea of going home to visit her mother's grave, and to bring her parents' ashes with her back to South City had always been Sabrina's dream. Six years had passed but she hadn't managed to find the chance to do so. She looked at Sebastian with anticipation and hope. She wasn't sure if he would agree, though she felt that he would likely say no.
To her surprise, Sebastian responded calmly and said,
"Of course you can go home to visit your late parents, but you will have to wait until I settle everything."
Sabrina paused, both shocked and confused. What was he saying?
