Ruth's phone suddenly rang as they were queuing up t o pay.
It was the phone that Sabrina had bought for Ruth yesterday. When she heard it ring, Sabrina started to tease her friend, saying, "It must be Master Ryan. You’ve just registered this number yesterday, so who else could it be? Say, now that you don't want to marry him anymore, it looks like he's coming after you instead. I bet he's going to ask you out for dinner now"
Ruth simply laughed at Sabrina's remark as she held her phone up to look at the caller ID. When she saw who was calling, the smile on her lips instantly froze.
It was her mother.
Yesterday, after Sabrina had bought her the phone, the first thing Ruth did was call home.
She desperately wanted to reconcile with her parents.
Regardless of what happened, they were still her parents, and she couldn't keep staying at Yvonne’s house.
However, her parents didn’t share the same sentiment. The second the call connected, they began screaming at her.
"You damn wench! Why are you calling us now? Are you trying to make fun of your cousin? Do you want to
see how embarrassed she is? You heartless idiot! She was the one who helped you all this while, and yet you fed any last ounce of sympathy you had left to the dogs. I hope you get knocked down by a car and die!" These were the exact words her mother had used to scold her yesterday.
After that call, Ruth hid in her bed and cried for a long, long time.
However, when she thought about Sabrina and how she could still stand tall despite the countless humiliations she faced, Ruth felt determined to become emotionally stronger.
As such, she didn't tell Yvonne about her conversation with her mother.
Early the next morning, Ruth decided to focus on her work and try her best to keep a smile on her face. With her newfound confidence, she would not allow her mother's words to affect her performance at work.
Yet, she had not expected that her mother would call her out of her own volition.
After taking a breath, Ruth covered the speaker and told Sabrina the truth. "It's my mother. I hope she'lll allow me home as soon as possible. I'm going to take this call, so please excuse me."
Sabrina nodded sympathetically. "Of course, I hope you can work things out with her."
