"Say, Sabrina..." Ruth's eyes were swollen from all the crying at this point. "Are they really my parents? I've always cared for them, I even plan on giving them most of my salary once I get it, keeping only a small part to cover my own expenses. They were supposed t o be my family, but now..."
After narrowly escaping a fate worse than death, Ruth didn't know whether she was supposed to hate them. All she knew was that her heart was filled with nothing but pain. Sabrina didn't know what she should say. She, too, was doubting if Mr. and Mrs. Mann were actually Ruth's parents. But who was she t o comment on this? Her own father was merciless towards her as well. Sabrina handed a tissue to Ruth and comforted her. "Don't cry, Ruth, you survived it. It's always darkest before dawn, you know? You are an adult now, there are still going to be a lot of obstacles that await you in the future, but you will have your own family after marrying Ryan and having your own children. You have no idea how healing children could be. Once you are a mother, you won't bother yourself over anything else."
A blush crept up Ruth's cheek at the mention of children. "I...me and Master Ryan, will we have our own children? Sabrina, I feel like I'm too stupid to be a mother. I don't know anything about motherhood."
Sabrina chuckled. "Silly girl! Nobody knows until they
actually have a child. Once you do, you will have to learn on the job. As the mother of your children, you will become as strong as steel."
Ruth nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I know. I'm going to become an independent, strong mother like you." She paused for a moment as her expression changed. She looked panicked as though she had suddenly remembered something.
"What's wrong?"
"Sabrina, the thing about me...getting stripped naked. Do you think you can keep it from...?"
"I will keep this between the two of us for the rest of m y life. I don't intend on telling anyone including Yvonne, not to mention Master Ryan. Don't worry about it."
Ruth nodded. "You are the best, Sabrina."
"You are not so bad yourself. You are one of few people who didn't kick me when I was down, which is why you are the most kind-hearted young woman I know."
Sabrina had always been a grateful person. She didn't have many friends, and so she treated the very few she had the way she would her own daughter: with sincerity and boundless generosity.
"Come, let me take you shopping. Let's get you some clothes, and then we can go visit Master Ryan together. Where is he staying?"
Sabrina was there the day Ryan had been attacked by Mindy with sulfuric acid, but she had forgotten about i t after all that had happened back in her hometown. Nonetheless, Ryan appeared unaffected then and was still smiling cheekily, so she didn't put much thought into it. Ever since she came back from her hometown, Sabrina had been occupied with work for the past few days and no one had mentioned the incident to her ever again. It was only natural that she hadn't given Ryan a thought.
"Healthy Heart Private Hospital near our office."
"Good, let's get you a beautiful outfit and go pay that Poole kid a visit."
And with that, Sabrina took Ruth out of the cafe. She wanted to distract her friend from the sorrow in her heart. For a young woman like Ruth to go through such inhumane treatment at the hands of her own parents, the trauma could easily escalate into longterm depression if she couldn't find a way to deal with the pain. She just wished that the wound in Ruth’s heart would eventually heal when she finally got married and formed a family of her own.
Ruth was an honest and simple girl. Though she had been hurt by her parents, she did not exaggerate her suffering for attention in front of Sabrina. That afternoon, Sabrina took Ruth to shop for clothes and went with her to the Healthy Heart Private Hospital after dressing her up. It wasn’t until they arrived that they found out Ryan had been discharged.
