"She has suffered from long-term malnutrition. Her skin is pale and because of malnutrition and lack of exposure to sunlight, her bones are actually underdeveloped, about five years younger than her actual age. Her skin was pale and tender to the touch, but there were multiple injuries on her body. I suspect that she has been abused for years,” said the doctor.
Alex paused for a moment before lowering his voice. " Just fix her, we will talk about the rest once she heals."
"Understood!" The doctor responded hurriedly.
Jane remained under medical care in the hospital for a n entire week and all costs were covered by Alex. The medical charge itself was not much, considering that most of her injuries were minor. However, Alex had to spend a ton on supplements. He also took the time to look into Jane's past for the past week. It was hard for him to believe that something like this could happen i n the modern world.
Jane smiled sadly from her sick bed. "The world is huge and filled with wonders. Even college students who study in the most vibrant city could be lured into remote villages and were held captive for five to six years, giving birth to a few children. News reports like this have never been far from the ears. Though I was locked up, I got lucky because I didn't get pregnant. That moron died right after marrying me and his
brother took his place. He was no fool, but he was... incompetent."
Reminded of her past, tears began streaming down her cheeks.
Alex, who was still stuck in his very own despair, replied to Jane, "That family has been punished. The mastermind behind all these and anyone who helped will be going to jail, so you don't have to worry about them coming after you. Where are your parents? Shall I get someone to send you home?"
"No!" She refused immediately. "Please don't send me home. I will leave once I recover completely. I can survive on my own. Please don't send me home. Um... I'll just leave right away, I don't want to cause you any trouble."
She lifted the blanket off and went off the bed to leave, but ended up falling without going far. Alex carried her off the ground.
"Good sir, please let me go. I really appreciate what you did, and I don't want to trouble you any longer." She wiggled in an attempt to escape.
"Where will you go?"
"It doesn't matter where I go. I can do chores or wash dishes for people. If that doesn't work out, I can just live off the street, picking up things that people no longer want. It doesn't matter, as long as I don't have t o go back to that family who never cared for me," she claimed in tears.
At that moment, they were both leaning very close to one another, to the point that Jane noticed the scent o f cigarettes on Alex. He was strong. It seemed so easy for him to carry her in his arms and that wouldn't make him tired. He simply watched her with a calm expression. He noticed that she was actually very beautiful. The kind of beauty that could make one's heart ache for her. When he went to look at her medical charts and found out that she was half a year older than him. Alex was never interested in women older than him, but the woman in front of him was different.
She was fragile, her face was pale as pale as a ghost. She looked as though she was longing for someone to nurture her. Her hands were waving awkwardly in the air as she didn't know where to put them, and Alex felt a sting on his heart at the sight. Perhaps it was the depression he had been in for that period of time, or maybe it was because he was provoked by what Lily said right before she left. He was confused. Even though he didn't know much about the woman in his arms, and it wasn't like he was particularly fond of her, but for whatever reason, he felt the desire to kiss her. He lowered his head and his thin beckoning lips brushed against hers.
Jane was stunned.
