A week after Alex had rescued Jane, he made her his i n the hospital. The entire hospital knew that Jane was sent there by Alex and assumed that she was his. The doctors who worked there all had mixed feelings about the discovery. Female doctors and nurses who were still young and single couldn't help but feel bitter about it. After all, Alex Poole was the symbol of majestic power at a very young age in Kidon City. There were as many women in Kidon City who wanted to marry Alex as women in South City who dreamt of marrying Sebastian. And now, they had to watch him spend countless nights with the patient in her room. The way he carried her into the bathroom to wash up and how a blush appeared on the woman's pale face that was just as small as her palms. They even had to listen to her calling Alex 'hubby'. 1
That was the story of how Jane was taken away in Alex's car to his home, all the while being the target of jealousy from many female doctors, nurses and even patients.
All the servants in his home would address her as ' madam', but Jane did not let it get to her head. She knew who she was. She was almost thirty when she started to follow Alex. The injustice she faced earlier i n life had only made her wiser. She looked at Alex calmly and addressed him as 'good sir', instead of calling him 'hubby' like she did at the hospital. Alex
wasn't surprised. He liked women who were sensible. He realized that dating older women had its perks. Jane wasn't as wilful or needy as younger girls, she was understanding and did not dwell on things that weren't destined to be hers. It was great.
"What is it?" He looked back at her steadily.
Jane lifted her gaze and looked at him longingly. "I won't ask to be your wife. I won't even ask to be your girlfriend. I...I don't think I count as a lover, so...I'll just be like any of the maids here in your house, but I don't need to be paid. All I ask is that you provide me with food and clothes, and that's enough."
Alex didn't expect her to ask for so little.
"I just want to have a roof over my head and serve you every day," she continued, "if you...want company at night, I...I can serve you in that way as well."
At this point, she was flushing crimson and couldn't bring herself to elaborate. Still, she was looking at him sincerely, as though he meant the world to her.
"As long as you are okay with me, I will do it willingly. I will never try to cling onto you, I. ..I am more than willing to...I can...I can even go and get a ligature if you would take me to the hospital, then you won't have to worry about me getting pregnant. Is that okay? " Noticing Alex's lack of response, she added, "You... you don't have to worry. If one day, you find a woman you truly love and wish to get married, I-I will disappear from your life immediately and never come back." 1
It was heartrending for Alex to hear her say that. It's a modern world around them, how could she still be so dismissive of her own happiness like women in the old times? She didn't seem like she was from a remote village hidden away in some mountain, why would she think like this?
"All I did was help you, why are you doing this? You belong to yourself, you are not a property that I own," h e said.
"I grew up in Kidon City as well." A bitter smile appeared on Jane's lips. "My parents formed a middleclass family and had nine children in total. I was always the neglected one. We used to live in a big flat o f about four-hundred square meters when I was young. There were five or six bedrooms in the apartment, but I slept outside with a yoga mat."
Alex had heard bits and pieces about her past back in the hospital, but he wasn't aware that Jane's parents could be so cruel.
"Are they your real biological parents?" he asked.
