Alex's expression became increasingly bitter at the sight of Jane crying her heart out in her sleep. It had been so many years and he had never bothered to consider what she truly felt, simply because she had been far too understanding, to the point that he didn't have to worry about her at all. Alex was never good at fawning over someone, especially when he was dealing with women. He wasn't sure whether he was supposed to comfort her, or wake her up. Just as he struggled to make a decision, Jane woke up in tears.
When she saw the tears on his shoulder, she realized that she really was crying. She could still remember distinctly what she had seen in her dream. In her dream, there was a little girl who had just learnt how t o walk. Her chubby little arms and legs wiggled as she stumbled forward, but she was walking so fast that she was almost running. No matter how hard Jane called out to the little girl, she did not look back and kept marching forward until she fell down a cliff abruptly.
Jane clearly remembered what the doctor had told her when she went for the abortion, and how regrettable h e sounded. "You are not young anymore. If you continue to wait any longer, you might not be able to give birth to a child. The fetus in you right now is a girl. You are such a beautiful girl with silky white skin with such grace and elegance, your daughter would
have been brilliant. Sigh...it's such a shame."
She felt as though her heart had been stabbed when she heard what the doctor had to say. She hadn't wanted a child before as her life was far too miserable and she didn't have the confidence that she could make a child happy. However, as she grew older and the longer she stayed by Alex's side, the more she wanted a child. A child that belonged to the two of them. But she also knew that Alex didn't love her, he never did. He might have brought her along to different events, even allowing for the others to address her as their sister-in-law or Mrs. Poole. But she knew better than anyone that Alex only cared for her. He could spoil her in ways that none of the women in Kidon City could even dream of, but he couldn't love her.
She thought back to her past, and there hadn't been anyone who cared for her the way Alex did her entire life. No one would treat her the way he did. He would carry her to the hospital when she was sick and spoon -fed her medicine. Whenever she had cramps during her time of the month, he would even rub his strong palm on her stomach to warm her up in order to ease the discomfort. That was enough. She couldn't ask for anymore. Nonetheless, she promised him over and over again when she first moved in that she wouldn't cause him any trouble, she wouldn't bear his child or ask for any title. She didn't want anything else, but to stay by his side as a maid.
Jane had lost her home, had been locked up and beaten back then, and to be taken under Alex's wings had already been the best thing that had ever happened to her. But humans were insatiable creatures. Now that Alex had given her so much, including six years of stability and respect from the entire Kidon City, was she really going to ask for more?
'No, Jane. You have to fulfill your own promises, you can't be so greedy. You are simply not supposed to have children. Back when you were held up in the basement by that fool's family, you didn't end up with a child either, did you? Things are already as good as they can be now,' she thought to herself. Because of that, she decisively carried on with the abortion and returned to Alex'side. She went on with her daily routine of cooking delicious meals for him and massaging him. She remained a cheerful smile in front of him and she had thought that she had her emotions under control. Little did she expect for herself to cry into his shoulder while they were sleeping in the middle of the quiet night, calling out to the child who fell down the cliff.
"You heard me, didn't you, Alex?" she asked, feeling guilty.
