After speaking, she voluntarily linked arms with Chad, turning to tell Coleen, “I’m always relying on my brother, you know.”
Coleen sighed. “You are really pissing me off.”
It’s a worry for parents when siblings don’t get along. But in her case, the siblings got along too well, and it was a worry for her as a mother too.
Chad was mature and steady. He comforted his mother, “Mom, why don’t you go to bed? Molly and I haven’t seen each other in a while. We’re just going to catch up in the living room.”
Coleen took the glass of water her husband handed her and headed upstairs. “Don’t stay up too late,” she reminded them before leaving.
Once their mother had left, Chad revisited the question from earlier. “Molly, you still didn’t answer me. Will you still let me hang out with you when you have a boyfriend?”
Molly was quick to respond, “And will you still hang out with me when you have a girlfriend?”
Chad chuckled. “Probably not.”
Molly looked unhappy. “I knew it. Once you get a wife, you will forget about your sister.”
Chad was in a good mood. He decided to give his sister some advice. “Do you know what you have to do to be my one and only?”
Molly blinked at him. “Yeah, kill anyone else, right?”
Chad was taken aback. His sister could be so brutal and foolish!
“But wouldn’t that be illegal?” Thankfully, Molly still had some sense in her, knowing that she’d be crossing a line legally.
Before Chad could even feel relief, Molly asked, “If I really did kill someone, could you protect me?”
“I’d be betraying my job if I didn’t arrest you myself!” Officer Chad threatened.
Molly flinched a little. “Then how can I be your one and only?”
Looking into her dark, shiny eyes, Chad said, “Stay by my side, as close as possible, at every stage of life. Do you understand?”
Molly pouted. “If I say I don’t understand, you’ll probably want to kill me. But I really don’t understand.”
Chad was losing his patience. “Think about it yourself.”
Chad stood up, pulling his sister from the couch. “Let’s go to bed.”
When they reached the door to her bedroom, Molly stopped. She grabbed Chad’s wrist and asked him seriously, “If I really killed someone, would you arrest me?”
Chad said, “I will protect you.”
Molly asked, “What about your future?”
Chad replied, “You’re more important.”
After saying that, he opened the door to her room, pushed her in, and closed the door behind her.
Molly looked at the closed door and smiled. For some reason, she felt happy. “Chad, I think I understand what you mean now.”
The next day, Leo returned home. He yawned and rubbed his eyes, which were red and swollen from lack of sleep.
Mia asked, “Where were you last night?”
“At the hospital. Uncle’s kick nearly sent Kyle straight to the morgue. He’s in the ICU now, unconscious. I went to interrogate him last night.”
Mia quickly poured a glass of water for her nephew and then hurried over to get the details. “Did you find out anything?”
“Nothing. Chad said he’d give it a try this morning.”
